Q: | Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why? |
A: | My favorite piece in my gallery is the Tim Sale Dark Victory piece i picked up earlier this year from Heritage. When I showed it to Andy B the first thing he commented on was the fact that the page was a self contained narrative. I'm always drawn to "moments" from a book. A page of sequential storytelling that captures a story beat is preferable, to me, than a splash page. Tim recently passed away so speaking about his genius in the past tense is saddening. However, Tim was a master at taking quiet moments and elevating them. This page is the best of what sequential storytelling has to offer. Tim, as the artist, acts as director, cinematographer, set designer, and actor. Every panel is a treasure. Every ink stroke is flawless. When I first read this page I laughed out loud. Alfred's comments help bring levity and comedy to an otherwise tense and poignant moment between Bruce and Selina. Bravo Mr Sale. RIP Maestro |
Q: | Please tell us a little about yourself. |
A: | I'm a numbers guy. Grew up in the 70s and 80s and really didn't get any exposure to American comics till middle school, when my best friend brought his father's BWS Conan comic to school for show-and-tell. Before this point, the only comics I read were Italian Topolino b&w collected editions that my parents would buy me to help pass the time when we'd go visit family in Italy. I knew about Spider-Man moreso from the Electric Company and cartoons. Same with the Justice League and Iron Man, Thor, Hulk. I didn't discover comics till around 1984. That's when I started the weekly ritual of riding my bike to the center of town and using my hard earned nickels and dimes to buy just about every comic at the 5 and dime. It would take approximately 25 years before I realized you could buy and collect OA too! |
Q: | How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start? |
A: | Sadly, I've only been collecting for about six years. I got back into comics after a very long break thanks to the Capullo Snyder Batman run. I googled what other books Scott wrote which lead me to Sean Murphy. I ended up following Sean on Twitter where I saw him post a link to his dealer Essential Sequential. As fate would have it, Jason, at ES, lived about five minutes from my work so I paid him a visit. He was incredibly gracious with his time and had stacks and stacks of portfolios full of OA. He gave me a tour of his space and showed me house own personal collection as well as what was hanging in the house. I think that's when I got the itch. |
Q: | How do you display/store your collection at home? |
A: | I've managed to negotiate wall space in the home office. I've got Sequential pages of sequential storytelling from two of my favorite books. Sean Murphy White Knight and Tokyo Ghost, as well as the cover to Tokyo Ghost and Amy Reeder's Rocket Girl. The rest is in some very nice high quality portfolios - archival of course. I recently upgraded all my portfolio to Itoya ring binders with polyglass refill pages. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |
Q: | What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions? |
A: | The list hasn't changed much since day one of collecting but the prices are now beyond... 1. Sandman (only two pages I really want. Moy had them both, but sold before I got to see him on Saturday at NYCC - back in maybe 2018) 2. New Frontier featuring Wonder Woman 3. Tradd Moore SSB - only one specific page 4. Tim Sale - Long Halloween 5. Tomm Coker - love his work on BMM Honestly, when I started collecting I thought I'd get the vintage stuff eventually. With prices now...I think this list is more wishful thinking than anything actionable. |
