DescriptionThis one arrived on our porch last week. By Robert Robinson, it's the cover for the Street & Smith pulp, Sea Stories, July 1926. Robinson studied with Howard Pyle between 1909 and 1912, which appears to be when his illustration career began. Robinson only painted about a half dozen pulp covers, but he painted loads of covers for the slicks beginning around 1910 and running to at least 1952, primarily for The Saturday Evening Post and various of the Hearst Magazines, such as Motor magazine.Robinson apparently gifted this painting to Earl H. McHugh, as he's added an inscription to McHugh at lower right. McHugh was a vice-president with Hearst Magazines in the 1930's and 1940's. Social/Sharing |
