Description

For the moment, I'm happy as a bug trying to acquire one outstanding representation apiece of a handful of comic strips I like. This is the second recent addition in this vein to my collection.

This is an exciting new adventure for me. I'm approaching it tentatively, with baby steps but rekindled enthusiasm for the hobby. I find myself intrigued by questions of collecting criteria. What, exactly, constitutes a desirable daily?

Should one prioritize trying to get a sample of a strip in which all the images are great? Is that even probable, in most cases? How important is the presence or absence of a primary character, in consideration of what one hopes will stand as a great example?

This is the nicest Carol Day I've seen for sale. I love the gorgeous first panel, and also really like the drawing in the last, which reminds me of the line of Jordi Bernet. The second frame is the least of the three, but it nicely captures a sense of transition. You can almost hear Carol breathing in that profile shot.

According to the amazon.com description, my Carol is from Seconds Out!, the sixth story line, which began on February 24, 1958 and concluded on May 1, comprising strips #452-508. Assuming these ran six days a week and not five, it's possible to establish the publication date of mine as March 14. (Seasoned Wright collectors, how was my detective work here?)

Quoting amazon: "Seconds Out! is the shortest Carol Day story, running just 57 episodes. It is also the only Carol Day story firmly set in the sporting world. In this story, as Nora and Paul Egan solidify their relationship and plan for marriage, Carol has a short romance with Gene Miller, a young amateur boxer trying to decide whether to turn pro."

Three great panels is really tough with Wright, one great and two solid, as here, is doing just fine I'd say! That panel one ranks very high among Carol shots, IMHO.

I love David Wright's work and this is a lovely example.

FWIW, here's the link to the e-book in case you'd like to read the whole story.

Exquisite lighting and cross-hatching in panel 1 and totally agree, the world-weary expression of the tough guy in panel 3 reminds me of Torpedo. It is truly a superior example of this wonderful strip. Congrats!
