Description

Silly Symphonies Devil Disney WWII Insignia Drawing for 15th Bombardment Squadron by Hank Porter (Walt Disney, c. 1940-1943). The 15th Bombardment Squadron was the first US Air Force unit to bomb targets in Occupied Europe during World War II. It attacked Luftwaffe airfields in the Netherlands on July 4, 1942, an operation that was ordered directly by General Henry H. Arnold and approved by President Roosevelt. Captain Charles Kegelman led the squadron in this attack, and he became the first in the 8th Air Force to receive the Distinguished Service Cross for his valor in the operation. The squadron continued to support the military by air, operating in North Africa and Europe until its inactivation in 1943. This insignia for the 15th Bombardment Squadron features a character inspired by a Devil in the Silly Symphony The Goddess of Spring. The devil holds a pitchfork at the ready while riding in an airplane made of a lightning-winged explosive. Hank Porter created this insignia for the squadron as part of Walt Disney's aid for the war effort. The drawing is rendered with graphite and colored pencil on trimmed onionskin paper. It measures about 7.5" x 9". The drawing is in Good to Very Good condition, with some handling and edge wear, including a minor crease on the lower right edge.
