DescriptionMarvel Fanfare was one of those 80s comics I really enjoyed collecting. At the time, it was published on better paper stock, with colors that were more vivid than most other comics. One of the cool things about the series were all the Pin-Ups. As a Black Widow fan (especially featuring that costume and hairstyle from the 80s that I always associated with Frank Miller) I was instantly attracted to this piece when it came up recently.June Brigman may not be a household name but she is a wonderful artist. I got to meet her when I was a young teen and actually bought a Conan page from her for $15 (sadly no longer have it). At the time she was drawing Power Pack and that was a title that I really enjoyed. Jim Lee - everybody knows Jim Lee the penciller. Here he is early in his career and if I can be honest, I didn't really notice his name attached to this piece until I won it. A nice bonus for sure. ** Wondering if Jim Drew the bottom image of the widow fighting the ninjas (?) only because these are the exact same ninjas in the Wolverine/Punisher piece I have by him in the Punisher gallery (if you are curious). PSA: If anyone has any other PinUps from this series (especially by Ken Steacy) - and you are considering selling, please reach out. Thanks again for checking out my gallery! Social/Sharing |

The highest praise I can give is that I would have torn this page out of the book and push-pinned it to my wall back in the day.

I also recall collecting Marvel Fanfare with fondness. You never knew what you were going to see in a given month. This is a beautiful pin-up with many cool images.

I like the Zipatone use on this page, it's also very well laid out and balanced. Jim Lee is certainly a nice bonus! Great pickup!

Oh yeah! Love these Fanfare pinups! What was great is that it wasn't just one guest pinup in the back of each issue. They were actually called portfolios and each artist would do several plates. And all the prominent artist of the period seemed to be doing them. Butch Guice, Craig Hamilton, Paul Smith, Kevin Nowlan, Charles Vess, and so many others. Even superstar inkers like Terry Austin got to show off their pencilling skills with their own portfolios. When I was a young naive collector, I foolishly made a vow to collect all the originals to these things. But even 30-40 years ago, it was easier said than done. Still, for a while I became known as that Fanfare portfolio guy. I even remember Albert Moy calling me up once and offering me an entire set of plates, but it wasn't an artists I particularly liked at the time so I passed. Anyway, this one sure brings back memories. Loved Brigman's Power Pack!

I remember really loving these montage style pieces in Marvel Fanfare and Marvel Comics Presents. It let my young mind run wild with what the upcoming story would be based on the story elements packed in the art. Fantastic piece.

I really love the different elements going on here. It's so busy, yet simple.

What a gorgeous image of femme fatale extraordinaire, Black Widow. I also love the backrground images, U.S flag, the Kremlin, and all the other goodies June Brigman purposely included. Heluva takedown, Dan

You'll remember Lee when Black Widow moves
Upon your need of Steacy
You'll go get the June in her pin up line
In Fanfare portfolio
So she tones her love
Zip to greys a while
Upon the Marvel eighties
In his arms she fell as the Duke came down
Among the portfolio
Will you stay with Lee?
With your Brigman love
Upon the fashion party
She’ll kick everyone with her legs and thighs
In the lines that feel like gold

Very cool, love Marvel Fanfare and its pin-ups in particular. Also slick use of zip-a-tone on Natasha's costume!

Of COURSE I've heard of the amazing June Brigman! But this other guy...Jim ... Lee is it?...hmm, doesn't ring a bell...but he seems quite competent. And you say he's well known? What other titles did he do?
HA!!!! I so silly...
All kidding aside, this is a fabulous Black Widow by two outstanding artists. I love the whole tableau. Congrats!!

Brigman is a great artist and storyteller. Amusingly, Lee's contribution is not that visible here, except for Psylocke's head on the left ;)

Marvel Fanfare was indeed a really fun title to buy back in the 80's. I distinctly remember the first issue selling out so fast that it became a $5 wall book the second the 2nd issue was released. I loved the plethora of pinups they published throughout the series and this one is as memorable as any of them. The Power Pack artist, paired with the Alpha Flight artist, with the inks on the Widow combining to look Kevin Nowlan-ish. Kudos on the score!

Awesome pinup and, yes, Marvel Fanfare colours were really stood out on the rack. I remember those Ken Steacy covers well!

The blending of Brigman and Lee created something where the sum of the two artists is greater than its component parts. Beautiful piece!

Strong movie poster feel, duke. Some elegant linework throughout - it almost feels simpler, but we know it's not. I like that quality in OA. Also, gotta love the zipatone accent on her costume. Congrats!
