DescriptionBIG '80s get here, at least for me! For a time, Thundercats was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid (has there ever been a better intro?) and I was adamant about picking up the comics Marvel would be releasing. They were OK overall, and many were adaptations of episodes of the show, but it was one of the first books I really collected. Thundercats comics?! No brainer for me at the time - I knew my $0.75 (and eventually, $1.00) would be going towards them!I picked up an interior page by Jim Mooney (see also in my gallery) but have wanted to get a cover from the series...not the easiest to find. I picked this up from Steve Donnelly at Cool Lines Art and dug this particular cover for a few reasons. First, it's an adaptation of an episode that actually bothered me as a kid. The Sword of Omens was defeated by Excalibur. "What? No way!" Mumm-Ra tries to pull a fast one but it of course all works out - I thought it would be cool to own this piece based on an episode I clearly remember. Second, it's by Ron Frenz. Spider-Man is my favorite comic character but Frenz Spidey covers from that era...shall we say...demand a certain premium. So I went with the next best thing. Lastly, it's just a great piece of art. I like the perspective of the 2 characters going at each other, and all of the blacks on the knight's armor (courtesy of inker Bob McLeod). This is the oldest cover I own (so far) and the only one with lettering included (so far!) so I'm glad I've got the Thundercats classic lettering/logo exhibited. Thanks for looking and hope y'all like. Hooooooo!!! Social/Sharing |

Haha - this is so great! It doesn't get any more 80s than Thundercats.

Awesome! Who didn't love the Thundercats growing up in the 80's? This was the twilight of the glorious run of fantastic Marvel Comics licensed properties than started with Star Wars (maybe even can be argued it began with Conan) and saw hit after hit with: Micronauts, ROM, G.I. Joe, Transformers, etc. Bravo!

Figure as a kid you're buying the comic to see your guy win...I'm sure there was some deep virtue to be learned from it all hahaha

Yeah, comics-wise, ASM was my start, and when it came to cartoons Thundercats was tops for me. When I found out at the local shop there were Thundercats comics?! I was ALL over it. Had my $0.75 and later $1.00 ready every other month (bi-monthly book) :) There were a number of artists that did covers, and as an an adult when I saw this OA available by the Spidey artist of my youth?! Again, ALL over it. As you note, nice combo pick that way :) Thanks!

Really great cover. Thundercats was such a great cartoon but for whatever reason I never read the comics. Probably because they were under the Star line and I thought I was too old for them lol
