DescriptionContinuing my year end string of Avengers posts with this Thor page from renowned Thor creator Ron Frenz! This was only the second issue from Thor that Frenz drew, starting what would end up being a 5.5 year run. Now, the Thor here isn’t the Thor we know, but a Thor of the future, Dargo Ktor, in his first appearance. This page is a great get for me as I LOVED this one-off issue as a kid. In a distant future, society is controlled by “the Corporation”, while there exists an opposing underground faction of people who use the concept of Thor as their rallying edict. A familiar narrative (well, not to me as a kid!) but it was cool seeing a Thor spin. The followers, in possession of Mjolnir, hope to one day find one worthy enough to lift the hammer and “possess the power of Thor”, thus defeating the Corporation. All the while, Loki, in alliance with the Corporation, looks to prevent the return of his “accursed brother”. During an attack led by Loki, jaded non-believer Dargo Ktor reaches for Mjolnir and lo and behold, becomes Thor! The cover to this issue really drew me in, and after buying, I flipped through it all the time to look at the art. Here Dargo, after using Mjolnir to create a whirlwind that literally blows the bad guys away in the page prior, lets the followers he’s just saved know he’s none too happy with them relying on, what was up until this moment, a mythical hero to save them as opposed to saving themselves. I love that there’s the image of him whirling in panel 1 and taking flight in panel 2. The capper for me are those last 2 transformation panels. Just classic Thor, whether it be from human guise to Thor or Thor to human guise, like here. “THW-OOM”! I like in panel 5 how those emanating lines indicate the force of the strike THEN we quietly go back to the background in panel 6. Notice how the “wow!” lettering is written in a smaller size than everything else up to that point :) Storytelling, baby. Hard to top great looking art with high personal nostalgia factor – I think you all would agree! Social/Sharing |

I very clearly remember buying this issue off the stands when it first came out. The art was fantastic and I felt it suited Thor even better than it did Spider-Man. As for the content quality of this page, this is about as top notch as it gets!

I actually think Spidey 1A and Thor 1B when I think Frenz. He was doing ASM when I picked up my first comics as a kid. Still looking for the right page there, but to your point, his Thor stuff is right up there! It was so dynamic, from earlier in the run to the more Kirby influenced stuff later. Thanks Ruben, and all, for the comments!

That is a fabulous page, with SO much going on, and now I definitely want to read the issue. Marvel Unlimited app, here I come! CAF is so great in that it introduces you to classic stories through the original artwork. Congrats on another terrific addition to your Avengers collection!

Yep, Paul, would definitely recommend. Dargo was used in later stories but his intro story was literally just this single issue. So won't take you too much time :) Fun original Thor story, new designs (Dargo's Thor look's kinda punk rock-ish spin IMO), and lotsa action. And great art of course! So...get to it, man! ;) Lemme know what you think!

Thanks, J! The page you have is great as well - and also a transformation one :) And congrats on an awesome Frenz collection overall! So many great Thor images, among others. I'll be watching to see what comes next!
