DescriptionBig check off the OA checkbox with this one. Finally – Yes! A Secret Wars (SW) page by Mike Zeck! One of my fave artists (if not my fave) on one of my fave series of kiddom! It was all the good guys and all the bad guys in one book…what more could a lil' KG ask for?! BIG shout out to fellow CAFer “J H” (who's got the page after this one if you wanna check it out- https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1546356) for allowing me the opportunity to pick this up – much appreciated, man! SW pages ain’t easy to come by!Some nice story beats here from the penultimate issue of the series. After stealing the Beyonder’s power, the nigh omnipotent (and facially reconstructed) Doctor Doom gets a visit from Cap, who’s looking for Spider-Woman. This moment sets up a great faceoff between Cap and Doom in the next/final issue, and I remember thinking back then that Cap and Doom were arch enemies – I didn’t know anything about the Red Skull yet, and hadn’t read many FF comics. So it’s cool having a page with these 2. Come to think, I had only seen Klaw up to this point in SW only. So I thought of him as a kooky henchmen only and not the main nemesis of one of my favorite heroes in Black Panther, as I would later find out. Klaw here leaves to find Spider-Woman, who is possessed by the Beyonder, trying to get his powers back from Doom via some subterfuge. The Beyonder then transfers to Klaw...not good for Victor. And that observatory model up top reminded me of Aughra's in The Dark Crystal :) What’s most cool about the scene IMO is the set-up we get regarding Doom’s mother. We know that this is a huge part of Doom’s backstory, to this day, but wasn’t so commonly known back then. Got fleshed out more a few years later in “Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange: Triumph and Torment” – another great book. You can see framed shots of Doom’s mother Cynthia up top and in panel 3, the latter being my favorite of the page. The distinctly Zeck/Beatty Cap profile shot probably has something to do with it, too. Truly hard to top for me in terms of art and nostalgia! These SW comics and the 2 SW figures I had as a boy (Spidey and Doom) were TRUE gems :) Social/Sharing |

Phenomenal page! I can still remember getting this issue in a comic book 3-pack along with issues 10 and 12 at Toys "R" Us when I was 8 years old. I read them until the covers started falling off. Congrats on adding a page from such a seminal series to your collection!

Right there with you, brother! There probably wasn't any other comics series or run that I flipped through more as a kid than SW. And I played with my Spidey and Doom action figures til all the black ink/paint that outlined Spidey's webbing and Doom's tech completely rubbed off. Thanks, Michael, and all, for the comments!

Sshhh! It's a Secret! Love that subheading. The Godfather of crossover events, I'm in awe of this page. Huge congrats, K!

The "sentinel of liberty", truest of true blue heroes against the most dastardly, villainous despot in the Marvel Universe, and with a rapidly mind losing Klaw as his henchman sidekick! Very memorable sequence! Big congratulations on finally acquiring a page from this series, man!

Taking the page out of context, Cap seems like he accidentally interrupted an intimate moment. Great page.

Ha! That part of the page has always given me a chuckle. The thing that's really gonna melt your noodle... he's also in a room ringed by pictures of his mom! No shhhhh, Kahlil, cause the secret is out. You got yourself a great page, if I do say so myself. :) I'm really glad to get the page into the hands of a real fan. Big congrats, my man!

Man, I didn't even notice this, LOL. I think it's becuase this story's been ingrained in my head, start to finish, since my first reading it at 5 years old. But, yes, I see it now, LOL! Nice bonus for art to give you an unexpected chuckle :) Thanks, Andre J and J for...apprising :) And J - thanks again for the page. Glad to be part of the SW OA crew!

SW was huge for me as well. It came during a period where I wasn't buying books but a good friend let me read his and this really started the turn back toward comics for me. I do have a beef with the Secret Wars toy makers and as a fellow fan of our favorite Jade Giant, I am sure you know why. Maybe that's why I haven't picked up a SW page yet ... I need to remedy that! This is a great page KG - happy to see it land in your collection. Major congrats! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Dave! I hear ya on the Hulk being curiously absent from the SW figure line. It had to be because the figures all had the same body sculpt - the Jade Giant gets shortchanged when it comes to keeping production costs low!

Great score! The series was a fulcrum for many of the Marvel titles and changed relationships forever. The artwork by Zeck and Beatty was clean and they took care to have ideal images of everyone.

Well put, Mr. Wai. Totally agree - first time we saw so many characters in a series and so many first interactions. Ramifications to this day. And it's cool that Zeck and Beatty were able to push through and make the book look so good (Layton, too!) despite the rough production process. LOTS of editing. On this page itself panels 2 and 5 were cut and pasted in, as well as Doom's mom's portrait in panel 3. Thanks for add, man!

MEGA-congrats, K!! I know this was HIGH on your list of "must add"s, and I'm delighted to see it housed among the other treasures of your awesome collection. And what a page! As in so many of the other stories he's featured in, Doom was the "star" of Secret Wars (symbiote nothwithstanding) and to have a page featuring him is the way to go, imho (and more Zeck Cap is never a bad thing, either)! The big takeaway here, of course, is the fact that Doom doesn't seem to opt for socks under the boots. Good to know. (Shhh! It's a secret!)
Congrats again, buddy, and it was cool of J H to let this page come to you! Touchdown!

Zeck achievement unlocked, and from a classic storyline to boot -- congratz buddy! This has such a behind-the-scenes, almost intimate feel to it... as if the characters were like "let's drop the pretenses and be real." Well freakin' done.

Great page from an epic story line! Cap, Doom, Klaw, and of course I like any panel that includes spider webbing. Thank you for including a link to the following page as well. Fun to read more of the story. In fact, I have been inspired to reread all 12 issues.

Secret Wars #11 was the one of the few comics that my barber shop had (along with Crisis #12 and FF #293), and I read it probably fifty times when I was a kid. It would be many years before I got to read #12 and finally find out how the heroes survived and defeated Doom. Anyway, I loved the art then, and I love it now. Congrats on acquiring this fantastic page!

Wow, that's funny, Travis. 50 times before reading #12?! The last image was the bolt strike - helluva a cliffhanger to have to be patient with, man :) I probably read it 50 times, too, along with the 11 other books! Thanks for the comment. Glad you love the page and the fact it takes you back to simpler times - we all need some of that!

Congrats on getting a Zeck SW page, it's a monumental piece of Marvel Comics history! Great call out in the model looking like it's from Dark Crystal.

M L said the same thing, and yeah, I'd have to agree :) Plus, I think he's reading the paper? Doesn't he KNOW everything?! Probably enjoys a leisurely read along with sipping on a nice spirit - even if omnipotent, gotta appreciate the simpler things. Maybe even more so! We all know Doom's got some stressful moments ahead :) Thanks, F!

A Secret Wars page!?! And one featuring Dr. Doom, Klaw and Captain America? You hit the jackpot, my friend. Zeck's work is so good and Beatty perfectly complemented his pencils.

I love moments like this when someone is able to get a piece from a story that impacted them. I think all of us were blown away by Secret Wars. How could you not be? And it was Zeck's art that has made it stay in my memory ever since. Really happy for you to snag this one! Huge congrats!

Zeck and Secrets Wars! What I love more from Zeck's art is how simple is! Just a few and fine lines to draw perfectly a character. Cap in first panel is a superperfect example of it!

I hear ya. With Zeck (and particularly Beatty inking him) you feel like they got just the right amount of rendering in. Not overdoing for the sake of overdoing. "Simple" I think can imply "easy", but we know that ain't the case. And on Secret Wars they didn't have much choice, lol! Scripts were often super late so subsquently pencils, inks, and letters had to be super rushed! Did my 5 year old self at the time notice or care?! Whatchou think? ;) Thanks, Toni!
