Description

“WOOOOO!!!!” a la Ric Flair.

OK. Just got had to get that out first. Now, on to writing.

I know I can go a little long on some of my descriptions…and…yeah…this will be one of those. If so inclined, fellow CAFers, please come along with me.

https://media.tenor.com/5UU0Ix3HyxoAAAAd/lets-do-it-johnny.gif

HUGE get, folks. Hard to think of a piece topping it for me, personally. Way up there with a few others I have. A Spidey vs Puma battle page from ASM 257! The first Spidey comic I remember buying at the comic shop!!

I’m 5 years old. Already a Spider-Man fan – TV/cartoons, old comics handed down, including some Marvel Tales books. But this was the first time I remember getting a brand new Spidey book off the shelf. The glorious cover of Puma punching Spidey while falling down the side of the building…”WHAT was going on here?! Who IS this orange dude? Is THAT Spider-Man?!” When I was a kid I could maybe get 2 comics at a time. This was no doubt going to be one of the ones coming home.

HOOKED. Couldn’t put it down – reread, reread, reread, even if I couldn't actually read everything. And of course had to go back to get the issue prior. #256 and #257 introduced the character Puma, and for y’all that know me, I like Native American characters. And this was the start. I liked the design a lot. That he was from a reservation, like my mom’s family is. Cool how he kinda meditated to transform. He was a bad guy, but not really. I could tell that. I liked this “villain”, and hoped to see more later. After Frenz, when it comes to Puma, I think of the great Spectacular Spider-Man issues drawn by Sal Buscema – was lucky enough to nab and post a nice one earlier this year. Oh yes! To cap this issue off, Mary Jane tells Peter she knows he's Spider-Man! Hanging from the cliff after that :)

Then this black costume. “What was this?! I don’t know, but I KNOW I like it. No web shooters? Webs come out of the back of his hands? And it just flows on and off him?!” Luckily, I was able to get SOME answers in Secret Wars, shortly after :)

And Felicia Hardy. That’s my gal. Not on this page, but was big in the arc, and to this day, the combo of this era of ASM, Secret Wars, and Milgrom Spectacular Spider-Man…the black costume and the Black Cat?! Add in Kraven’s Last Hunt a couple years later?! CA-RAZY fan KG is. Always will be. I could keep going but there’s art to talk about.

Way to start off a page, right?! Check out that top panel! New style web shooting to the left . To the left, to the left. Back of hand web shooting “PWIP!” to the left. Music reference, sorry. Marcus Wai’s influence. That panel just rocks. Then you got the follow up. You said it Puma – “AMAZING--!” Gotta dig his shocked expression there, and I think it’s pretty cool you got part of the actual ASM title right there, spoken by a character. Puma gets some webbing on his hands, and realizes, “IT’S ALIVE!” Say it like Doc Frankenstein with me. Earlier in the issue, it’s hinted (in this GREAT page in the gallery of fellow CAFer/collector bud “Duke Fleed” - https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1423435), and Puma reveals to Spidey here – organic webbing! From a live suit, which Reed Richards confirms in the next issue. Spidey clearly didn’t know, but Puma ain’t buying it, capping off one more great action shot highlighted by a full figure Spidey! Side note: I don’t remember asking my mom what “organic” meant, but I’m sure I did, among a few others :)

HUGE thanks to Mike Burkey - not the easiest page to let go, but trust, it is in good hands. Great hands! AMAZING hands ;)

This makes 2022 for me on the OA front. I’ll be staring at this one lots in the coming weeks. But I will have some gravy comin' :)

Thanks, all, for looking and I wish you the best of luck, fortune, all that, in your OA pursuits!!

Lol, thanks, BROTHER!  "Finally, this page, has come BACK to KG!" ;)  Well, it was never with me in the first place, but that's what popped in my head first.  And don't worry - Michael made sure to get the Kool-Aid man in there :)

Thanks, ALL, for your great comments!!  We all know hitting these personal big targets...is...BIG.  Sorry, still can't think.  But y'all get it!  "Woooo!!"

Marcus, you do not disappoint!  And I did figure, to get a page this pristine, who need's a spleen?!  I mean...you can survive without it, right?!  Tougher question was could I survive without this page once I knew I had a shot?!

And, Puma's right, it's an Amazing page. Great action, fantastic dialogue that ties right into Marvel History, and excellent art. Hat Trick! And great story from you, too. Huge, hearty congrats!

JN 80, you go, boy!  "Impressive" in my Darth Vader voice.  Got a few of the 4 Horseman in there, referencing Puma shoes..."my man!"  Like Denzel in Training Day.  And your last line?  Spot on.  My journey to 2022 OA nirvana is now complete.  Vader voice again.  Or, maybe, my journey to the OA dark side (black costumed Spidey!!) is now complete.  Whatevs.  It's MINE.  Thanks, man!

I remember speaking with you over the phone a while back about this issue and how much it meant to you when we discussed the most pivotal comics that forged us into the fans of the medium we are today. I bet this day is such a dream come true owning this page. And I just thank you for sharing your excitement and enthusiasm with all of us on CAF.

Here's to you, man. You deserve this. It is absolutely beautiful and truly AMAZING.

My first thought was, "Wow, I haven't seen this page since it first surfaced around 2005, I wonder why?". But then I remembered that Mike also gobbled up 80's era ASM pages on top of the Romita ones and figured he probably had it. Then I read your description and you confirmed it! So glad you were able to pull it out of his collection, but even happier for you that you finally got yourself a page from this issue. Though truth be told, with the way you'd been focused on wanting to get one over the last year or so, I knew this was coming sooner rather than later! Nothing much to say that you already haven't, other than it is clearly a very strong action oriented page offering up a large amount of both Spidey and Puma goodness. I know what it means to you to get this and it makes me happy to see you so happy to have finally succeeded in this hunt. Congratulations, Kahlil, well deserved!

You had an inkling, didn't ya, Ruben?  Arose again top of mind last year, and started the conversation in earnest a few months back.  Glad Mike and I got where we did.  Thanks, man!

Kahlil!!  You have my most sincere congrats on this well-deserved triumph!  An absolutely eye-popping, fantastic slice of nostalgic comic book heaven here, home at last!  I remember those first two panels well, from my own multiple re-reads of this book; "How much force are those webs traveling with to tear the weights out of Puma's hands like that...and to stick it to the wall... and Puma can't tear it of?!?"  It actually got me very frightened for anyone who was on the receiving end of a webbing bath ("Careful, Spidey!"), and made me grateful that it was Spider-Man who was in control of such stuff...  Or WAS he...?  The "organic" clue here (obviously the first place we as readers found this out!) was compelling, and the ensuing issues with the big Symbiote reveals and introduction were SO much fun to read as a kid.

And this page is positively radiating with the 80's Spidey goodness you were after, K: all-out action and mayhem in the mighty K Gearon manner.  You couldn't ask for a finer example of the crisp and clean Frenzian storytelling and rendering - seriously, you could not - and no one deserves to showcase this piece more (SO gorgeous in black and white!).  Positively awesome, and good on Mr. Burkey for parting with this so you can enshrine it in your mighty collection.  Wonderful!!

Chris - my brother from another mother!  That's crazy, man.  And cool!

And yes, love Puma's design, to this day.  What's kinda funny is, I don't know if everyone was on the same page yet regarding the color.  Green on the cover, blue in the book :)  Well, definitely not a singular instance when it comes to this stuff :)

"...it's organic!" Very memorable early clue all is not as it appeared with Spidey's costume! Congrats, and thanks for sharing!

Puma, Black Costume, Ron Frenz, a lot of panels with Spidey and a page from the comic that you actually read when you were a kid. I can feel your excitement for this fantastic page!

Yeah, man, if done right, Puma could be pretty cool to see live.  Unique story, unique look, potential character interactions...all there.  But if not, it's all good.  We always got this stuff don't we?!  :)  Thanks for the comment, and congrats again on your recent Sal Buscema Spectacular Spidey add featuring Puma - one of the best pages of the character I've seen!

You just grabbed one of my dream: an ASM page by Ron Frenz, pieces are so absurdly rare that I'm afraid it will remain a fantasy for me!

Big big congrats, my friend!!

Fabulous ASM page by Ron Frenz! Terrific action here from the very first panel to the last! Grogeous inks by Rubenstein polish off the page beautifully.

I remember reading this when I was a kid, and it's almost too impresive to believe that "There it is, the actual original page, and it's in the hands of my friend."  Wow, I bow down!!!

Immediately popped into the head of my high-school-in-the-'90s-self after reading your comment :)

Appreciate it, bud!  Glad you dig it, and that you also share share in the "take it back" sentiment :)
