DescriptionThis month I’m featuring ‘80s panel pages from comics I enjoyed as a kid, basically my gateway drugs…er…books, so thought I’d follow suit with new posts as well. And, back when, the book this page is from was released only 4 months after the book my post from last week (grail-ish ASM page!) was released :)The Iceman limited series. I didn’t pick these up as they were released. But, shortly after the conclusion of the 4 issue mini, I picked up all 4 in one plastic bag – my first multi-pack! I was all about it because of the “Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends” show. HAD to check out the Iceman comic, and I could get the whole run start to finish in one fell swoop?! Done! I’m lucky to own a couple splashes from the series, including the title splash to this issue 2 (check ‘em out here https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1220985 and here https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1614820 if so inclined) but did want a panel page, too. I remember reading the series a few times just so I got everything. Was a lot packed into the panels, both in terms of art and dialogue – got your money’s worth in that regard. Was a darker story, and now that I think back, kind of a precursor in that way to Kraven’s Last Hunt, as least for me, as the Iceman series was also written by J.M. DeMatteis. This page features Iceman battling Kali, a baddie created for the series, and a henchman of the primary antagonist, Oblivion. Nice action panels up until the final headshot. Really like that first panel, with Bobby making that big ice fist. Good stuff by the late Alan Kupperberg with inking assist by Mike Gustovich. It’s funny, when re-reading the page and seeing Kali use the words “bounce-box” and “she”…couldn’t help but think about the Justice League flick, lol. Another trip down memory lane – thanks for looking! And a last quick aside. The recent Issue of “BACK ISSUE” magazine, #132, featured stories on ‘80s Marvel limited series. One was on Iceman, and images of my splashes linked above were used in Dewey Cassell’s great article, which was very cool (pun!). If you got access, check it out. All the stories on limited series were some fun informational reading! And yes…they had me thinking about the OA to some of them :) Social/Sharing |

Iceman, like Kupperberg an underrated stud. Used to love imagining 1-on-1s between him and Human Torch as a kid!

Oh yeah, man, no doubt. And I couldn't wait for Iceman and Pyro to face off in the X-Men films. You knew from the START that was going to happen :) And yes! We got to see him iced up! Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

So damn wicked when a page of sacred meaning finds its way home to its rightful master. So jealous and pleased for you my friend. Iceman is in his element ready to lay down some eXceptional smackdowns! Thanks for sharing as always!

Another awesome Iceman score, K! Beautiful, well-balanced, multi-panel example from this mini that (just as you say) has everything you might be after. Awesome inking here, and I love the close-up in panel 6; a really effective and dramatic move after the more traditional (and very effective) staging of the previous 5 battle panels. It's a really FULL page (word balloons, sound effects, inking details), but not crowded; a pedal-to-the-metal onslaught to the comic senses, that Iceman assures will always be cool. :) Really lovely page, K - congrats!

I LOVED the advent of the Mini and Maxi series! I bought up a large percentage of them, Marvel and DC, and it was fun to know you could start with issue #1 and easily collect the complete set. As an X-Men fan, the Iceman mini was a must have, especially coming out only a few years after Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends! You got yourself a nice, action oriented page too, nice! I wasn't a Kupperberg fan but Gustovich made him look better and I was a fan if his indy stuff already, so it was cool to see him on this!

Flying ice fist at your face... I feel like that should have been a finishing move. Awesome page. Congrats!!!

This page is as cool as ice:
Kathy: So what's important to you?
Johnny: If you're not true to yourself then you're not true to nobody. Live your life for someone else, you're not living.
So drop that zero and get with the hero.

Fun vintage Iceman piece, so many great characters to follow on their many adventures. We didn't have to wait too long to go from one mini series to the next.

Most impressive thing? Kali kicking Iceman's butt...while in heels! You have been shoveling coal into my nostalgia fernace with the last couple, Kahlil. I got my Iceman issues when my grandpa bought the next door neighbors comic collection for me to read (a full long box for $20). I reread them every time I went over. And I dig those other pages of yours, too. Very cool battle page. Congrats!

Kali don't play. You wanna kick butt or look good? Get you someone who can do both!
And ah yes, the long box - could switch out "treasure trove" for "long box" there :) Childhood gold, no doubt. I been there once or ice. *BADUM TSH*
Thanks, man!

Great Iceman page! I think this story was one of the best things Kupperberg did. And thanks again for letting us use your artwork with the BACK ISSUE article.

Was my pleasure, Dewey - thanks for asking! Glad to have helped, and it was cool seeing the pieces in the mag, for sure. Again, great article. Don't think we'd ever seen this series so thorougly looked at, so it was cool to see Iceman and Kupperberg get some play that way!

I've been reading BACK ISSUE since day one and have the new issue where the Iceman article appears in front of me right now. Dewey Cassell and the rest of the team at Twomorrows never cease to amaze with their publications, and the excellent Iceman article was part of another great issue (Larry's Silvestri DPS that he posted this week also makes an appearance in the same issue). Great page here with a great character - can't beat that.

Excellent panel page. So much going on! And thank you for including links to your two splash pages from this series, cuz they were fun to see. I was happy to see I left comments on both, because they are awesome too!
