Description

I like to close out the years’ posts with a bang , at least for me, and here ‘tis for 2024! First Art Adams published piece! I’ve wanted one but one from the ‘80s and this hit just the right chord being a black costumed Spidey page by Arthur on both pencils and inks. I LOVE his rendition from this issue. The eyes, the long lean musculature and use of negative space to highlight it, and the different poses he’d have Spidey in. Lucky to have nabbed this example – thanks for the chance, KE!

The story’s a fun one-shot focusing on the New Mutants’ Warlock, along with Spidey, but the pickup’s all about the Spidey images as those are what got me as a youngster. Got a nice straight up shot in panel 1 as well as a full figure “THWIP!” shot in panel 3 while also grabbing his oft used camera with the other hand. Funny, and kinda neat, how his webbing is coming from his wrist…should be from the top of his hand :) Granted I’m pretty sure this is only second time Arthur drew the costume after the Marvel Team-Up #141 cover he did with Mike Mignola. I’m now up to ‘80s black costumed Spidey pages by Frenz, Zeck, and now Adams – helluva trifecta!

As always, thanks for looking, and Happy New Year all!

That's a big get indeed. Adams was on fire during the 80s and we all have a soft spot for his sequential art (even if would get EVEN better with age). Huge congrats and HNY

What??? They told me no bunnies were harmed in my Nad's For Men Intimate Hair Removal Cream. Well, back to the bush it is.

Totally unrelated subject. You think I should change up the swim suit this year?

Into swim briefs?  Sure!  If out of them?  Why?!

Thanks, JC, and all, for the comments!

Adding an outstanding black costume Spidey page by Art Adams to your Frenz and Zeck black costume examples is an EXCELLENT way to end the year.  I especially love that third panel, but I am so impressed by how Adams distinguished the black of Spidey's costume from the black countertop in that first panel.  And having him swing away in panel 4 is icing on the cake.  Congrats, and Happy New Year!  Looking forward to your 2025 posts, and see you at OAX!

Right, Paul?!  That black vs black ink technique...looks so good in the OA.  And yes, that trio of artists...we can agree as huge fans of Spidey...could do worse :)  Thanks, man, and YES, looking forward to catching up in person at OAX!

Wow!!! Congrats on a true grail!

Ive tried many times to convince owners of AA Spidey annual to trade/sell their pages and have always heard the same reply ... 'NO'.

Congrats on succeeding where many have failed (including myself)!

A web line, over Spidey found
Such a lust for life, and Marcus comments now
We save the furry ones, on lab lightning raid
Just like a critter runs, like a fire needs flame
Oh, I burn for you

I got to feel ink in my blood, whoa, oh
Ink needs your brush, so needs your tone, whoa, oh
Art I want, Art I need, Arthur must, annual
Art I want, Art I need, is a lust, annual

Love that you brought some of the story into your lyrics, man :)  You're an annual!  I mean...an animal.  I mean...either!!  Thanks for the add, MW!

For Arthur Adams, when you think annuals, it's usually the X-annuals that come to mind.  But I have a special place in my heart for this one because unlike those, this is pure Adams (pencils & inks).  When it came out in 1986, I was initially discouraged from trying to find a nice example from it because I had heard a rumor that some rich collector was trying to put the whole book together.  So I never even bothered.  But 12 years later in San Diego (when I wasn't even looking) I was lucky enough to score the only splash page from the book.  Congrats on ending the year with this 4-panel gem of a page.  It's a beauty!

Yes, AA on pencils AND inks was definitely part ot the draw, E.  So you have the Godzilla Warlock splash?!  Super fun and memorable page!  I gotta see it one day.

I'm glad you like this pick up!  My second Art Adams piece and first published.  One closer to catching up with you ;)  Thanks for the comment!

I love love love this book. Art was allowed to be his art Adams-est adding all the wacky Godzilla and pop culture references, the spindly spidey and the shapely ladies. Great book, garbage coloring/printing on that annual so nice to see in b&w! Beauty of a page KG!

You ain't kidding as far as the "Adams-est" and those references!  The first panel of the page after this one has a head shot of Warlock as David Letterman!  "Spindly Spidey and shapely ladies"....spot on, my friend!  I included an additional image of the printed page, too...yeah...the OA looks a tad better :)  Thanks for the add, Chuck!

AA can be hit-or-miss with me.  But this is a hit.  Awesome layout design, clean storytelling, and fantastic (but not over-wrought) rendering.  Look at that rabbit!

This is just beautiful – from the layout and perspective in the first panel, to Spidey's perfect proportions in the third, to whatever's going on with that rabbit in the fourth. Huge congrats on this and the trifecta!

Very cool.  I like Art's art of this era and I still need to find a page.  This is great.  I love the bunny in the last panel, it has me wanting to go find a digital copy to read of this book again.  I remember well when Webs first hit the comic rack.
