DescriptionCaptain America (volume 5) issue # 21 cover.Reprinted in the Captain America: The Red Menace trade paperback inside and as the back cover. There are very few things that I chase after. However, art from the legendary creative team of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting was something worth chasing. Steve drew some amazing covers but this was easily one of my favorites as it features both Bucky / The Winter Soldier and Captain America flying over London on top of a bomb. Comic fans recognize the irony of this image. At the end of World War II, Bucky and Captain America were trying to disarm a flying drone with bombs heading towards London. Captain America falls off the plane and eventually falls into the river below. Bucky manages to disable the drone but it explodes. Both Captain America and Bucky were presumed to have died that fateful day. Steve Epting, being the master draftsman that he is, manages to update that imagery to perfection. Cheers! N. Congrats Nelson! I would say beware Greeks bearing Eptings but you cannot deny the power of Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Enjoy. Its a magnificent cover. Bucky in all his glory!

I have long loved this cover for some of the same reasons you listed. The theme is classic and easily recognizable. The series is an all time classic and for my money my favorite Cap run of all time. The execution is the cake topper. I rate Steve Epting at the top for Cap artists. Yup, I love Kirby but my opinion Epting is the best there has ever been on Cap over his roughly 60+ issues illustrating Cap in that glorious tonal wash. This one is a gem and one of the best in the series and Epting Cap covers are as rare as it gets in comic art. Well done and Bravo!

Congrats on picking up a fantastic Epting Cap/Winter Soldier cover! There weren't too many with the Winter Soldier, and I love the homage to the drone that separated them in WWII.

Nelson, you are a trusted friend and I am elated that you have become only the 2nd custodian for this glorious Winter Soldier cover! I purchased this directly from Steve Epting back in 2006, who is a Modern day Master; his stellar work alongside Ed Brubaker on this run is unparalleled and has perfectly defined and cemented the legend of Captain America and his relationship with Bucky. The Winter Soldier mythos is the greatest story to come out of Marvel in the past 30 years! There were only four Winter Soldier covers drawn by Steve up to issue #25 (pre-death of Captain America) so you must feel proud to put this on your mantle! The definitive Captain America storyline for generations to come will always be the Brubaker/Epting run on this title.

I don’t think collectors realize how scarce that artwork is for such a hugely significant run. I rank it as one of the last great comics Marvel did before this dearth of quality the last 7-8 years and one of the best series Marvel has ever done. But consider... this is the first Epting cover transaction in 3.5 years. The one before that was just a cover already in market changing hands at auction. There have been NO new Epting Cap covers out there in 7 years. There are only 18 covers of the 49 Epting created for the original 50 issue run (one being a half cover Civil War crossover) that are owned and that has not changed in 7 years. He also did the final 5 covers for the 2011 Brubaker Cap series and Winter Soldier one shot. So, I highly revere this entire series and ANY Cap cover Epting did. I rank the run up their with Miller DD, Byrne X-Men etc. it’s not there yet but it’s closing in on 15 years old already and was a major source for the Cap film trilogy. I have 5 complete sets of th
