DescriptionI loved Ditko's Dr. Strange growing up and was very excited when Speedball came out. While that series wasn't his best work, I do think it was underrated and that Jackson Guice's inking was a very good fit. This is the first page of original art that I ever purchased -- in 1995, from an ad in the back of Comics Buyers' Guide. I'm still really attached to it, although kicking myself that I wasn't buying Spider-Man pages at the time :) In addition to being page 1 from issue #1, this was also used for a comic shop promo poster used to advertise the series. The Speedball image was also used for the corner box art to Speedball issues #1-10 as well as Marvel Comics Presents issues #85 and 96. The art is signed by Jackson Guice at the bottom, and I'm assuming he received the art from Marvel and then sold it, since Ditko famously would not sell his artwork. Social/Sharing |

Cool! A modern day classic for me! I was already long a Guice fan by the time this came out, and as a big fan of Rom, I was already in love with the Ditko/Guice combination which had been seen a few years previous to this. Great stuff, Ted, and thanks for finally starting to post your cooler pieces in your CAF gallery.

Don't kick yourself for not buying more Spidey stuff. At least you have this great title page!!

Absolutely fantastic page! This run was the last of Ditko's greatness at Marvel IMO, really harkening back to his prime 20 years earlier. Congrats!

Lol, agreed. ~ 1995 I remember seeing two consecutive Ditko ASM awesome fight pages from issue 7 owned by fellow CAF member and friend, Clem So for $3-4k each. That memory still hurts, lol. Still, love your Speedball page, easily the most memorable and best of the series. Jackson Guice was both sympathetic and complementary to Ditko's pencils, taking his time and making these early stories quite special indeed. Congrats!

Just a great classic feel! Lots to pore over with this one, as I'm sure you have :) Interesting, and cool choice, to obscure his face with the bubbles. Pure Ditko goodness overall! Congrats!
