DescriptionThe pride and joy of my collection is the X-Men #107 page 2-3 splash introducing the Sh'iar Imperial Guard. I was lucky enough to purchase the original pencil and ink art in 2004 and in 2023, I was delighted to add the original color guide to my collection (thanks to Sean Rutan). You can see the black and white art here: https://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1851009Now for the bad news. While the coloring is original from 1977, colorist Andy Yanchus re-used this for Marvel Masterworks #12 (Uncanny X-Men Vol.2) in 1990. He cut out the original color guides and taped them onto new Marvel Masterworks templates with new coloring codes on them. It's not obvious from the front, so I've added an image of the back for reference. I'm not entirely clear why Andy Yanchus did this. I'm guessing the coloring was mostly staying the same and he just wanted to make a few changes here and there, so there was probably no point in re-coloring it. It's just a shame as the original coloring codes now no longer exist. I should probably also comment that I'm pretty sure that Dave Cockrum decided on the color scheme for these characters. He obviously wanted to make them reminiscent of the Legion of Super-Heroes costumes that inspired them, but different enough not to violate copyright. Gladiator (in his first appearance here) was obviously colored with Superboy/Superman in mind. Social/Sharing |

He probably has to justify getting paid for this job by updating things a bit for the printer's modern standards and be in line with the rest of the colors of the entire line. It's beauty to show off the primary colors Cockrum used for all the costumes of everyone.
