DescriptionThis is page three from "Terra" (last of the six voyages), originally published in Pilote in the early '70s. Druillet's vision was part of a druggy, apocalyptic fantasy vibe that included the album covers of Roger Dean, the Elric and Jerry Cornelius novels by Michael Moorcock, Herzog's film Aguirre, the Wrath of God, and the resurgent popularity of art nouveau and symbolist art. He was influenced by Kirby's FF (among many other sci-fi works) and he's one of the few cartoonists in any country who gave Kirby a run for his money in the handling of scale and decoration. Kirby, for his part, became aware of Druillet around the time these stories were published (in France) in album form:"Jack and Roz visited my bookstore not long after we opened, probably in the neighborhood of ’73 or ’74. We stocked European comic albums in depth, the first comics store in the country to sell them. Jack briefly glanced through the familiar American comics. Then he began on the European titles, looking through them without comment until he came to Phillipe Druillet’s books. He examined the color Lone Sloanes at length, going from page to page. Finally he put them under his arm. “Now, that’s my kind of artist!” Jack exclaimed. —Richard Kyle, letters page, JKC 13 Pages from Druillet's breakout period are not so easy to come by, especially stateside, so I am pretty giddy about this acquisition. It's monstrously big and it looks like its done some hard traveling itself. The first additional image shows the size of the page compared to large and modern size US pages. In the upper panels we get a glimpse of Druillet's planet-dwarfing celestial architectures as Sloane's ship, the O Sidarta (which itself had been a leviathan presence in the preceding chapter), slips like a tiny flea through the god-built structures which imprison the earth itself. Then our perspective shifts as the flea disgorges the lander, which now appears as a titanic insect straddling the world. Many thanks to Chris Parente for parting with this rare jewel. Fantastic demented page! Very interesting comment about the Kirby/Druillet parallel. It was a personal shock to read Druillet as a teenager and it's still so impressive today. Congrats Aaron.

Congrats Aaron.Shock is the right word, Jerome. If you can imagine, as a California teenager only knowing US comics, to discover this wild European approach, extreme in ways I never imagined comics could be... it still looks alien!

Love it! Druillet is a visionary artist whom I've always associated with the great Moebius.

Monsterpage alright. No wonder that it has been folded. Big congrats, Aaron. I remember reading Druillet's books in the 1970s but must confess that I didn't really get them. Maybe it was the French language. Fantastic artwork though.

AMAZING! I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN DRUILLET DRAW A WEAK PAGE OR PANEL NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT. THE KIRBY INFLUENCE IS APPARENT. CHRIS'S DAD, JOSEPH PARENTE WAS A PIONEER IN ORIGINAL COMIC ART & KNEW & BOUGHT DIRECTLY FROM DRUILLET, AS WELL AS MANY OF THE GREAT ARTISTS OF THE SILVER & BRONZE AGE . CONGRATS!

This is just grand! Druillet now has an incredible comet-like artistic journey, spanning decades, but his early 70's work burns like a Supernova! Congrats for digging up this gem!
