Description

"Aye, and behind the Cameroons there's things living we know nothing about. I could a' made books about many things. The Jago-Nini is still in the swamps and rivers. Giant Diver it means. Comes out of the water and devours people. Old men'll tell you what their grandfathers saw, but they still believe it's there. Same as the Amali I've always taken it to be. I've seen the Amali's footprint. About the size of a good frying-pan in circumference, and three claws instead o' five", said Alfred Aloyius "Trader Horn" Smith in his memiors titled 'Trader Horn' written by Ethelreda Lewis, and published in 1927. The creature is said to make great bellowing sounds, and attack canoes who wander too close. They live in hollowed out caves in the curves of the rivers. There is a great documentary on Youtube titled 'Jurassic Africa' about living dinosaurs in the jugles of Africa- check it out.

This finished study was prepared for the New York Zoological Society's magazine 'Animal Kingdom', for an issue with an article on legendary creatures which may live today.

Below the painted section is the outline of a pygmy in action, showing the flow of Frazetta's handwork as he finds his spot on the page. He signed it in a fine, yet bold, pen, showing he considered the piece finished, and ready to paint.

The composition and movement of the figures are amazing! I like the color in the prelim better than the finish

It's called the Mokele-mbembe and people still look for the critter sporadically, but it's real tough country. Fingers crossed for a living dino, some fine day...

Frazetta's artwork is full of life and movement to bring these scenes of ancient worlds to life given the parameters provided by exact scientific study and what we can surmise through the work of archeologists.
