DescriptionThe Library of Congress was anonymously donated the original artwork from the first Spider-Man story about a decade ago and if you make an appointment you can view the originals, take photos without flash, and download 400dpi tiff scans of the artwork.I had the opportunity to do so on 03/06/18 and can't recommend it highly enough. Also, as long as you're there, take the tour of the Library of Congress, the architecture is astounding. Here is a link to my Google photos album with all of the photos and scans. Enjoy!

So... your appreciation has nada to do with the incredible Talent of Steve... or the History... but more to do with "White-Out?

You have to go back for another visit. But this time, watch The Thomas Crown Affair before you go (either the 1968 or 1999 version). LOL

Thanks for sharing these! Also, how far in advance do you have to make an appointment to view these?

Sara, the curator, recommends when you make your flight plans. I was really lucky, contacted her Saturday, heard back Monday morning, was offered 1pm that same day to view just the Spider-Man portion of the story for about a hour, or sometime between 8:30-10am Tuesday when I could view all four Ditko stories from Amazing Fantasy #15. I opted too see all four on Tuesday at 9am at my leisure and spent about two hours with them, before flying home later that day.

Use the “Ask a Librarian” message function on the Library of Congress website to inquire about viewing this or any of the library’s possessions.

When I first saw this, I had a brief vision of you running away, with them tucked under your arm, while securirty guards shouted to stop or they would shoot.

It's great to have this pop up as today's Comic Art Highlight. Thanks for your link to all the great pics. Also, it's nice to see you resume collecting art.

I never noticed it before, but Liz looks like she was corrected by Stan Goldberg(???) Now that would be weird.

Apologies to Stephen F who emailed me that his comment was sarcasm... d'oh< My bad... I replied:
It's not just "Your" sarcasm... it's hard to tell a lot of the time.
I was at Comicon some years back, having Dinner with Chris Sprouse and his soon-to-be ex-wife, Patty, at a nice Restaurant in the Gaslamp District... and through the entire meal, we were sitting right next to a Table of Comic Art Collectors.
They never noticed us, even though a couple of them were bragging about and showing-off pages they had just purchased from Chris and I. There were a few of them who were "White-Out" Freaks saying that they would never-ever buy a page with White-out on it... We all thought that was high-sterical.
When I was a plebe, I worked for Frank Giacoia in the Marvel Office. there was as much White-out on the page as there was Ink.

Was it a round table of collectors because some of them are round the bend.? Some of my favourite artists throw whiteout around. Its only really annoying when the page has been displayed by morons who do not realise or do not care that paper turns brown in direct sunlight over a period of time. Then its really annoying as the contrast is too much. Of course most of these guys sell the pages when they turn brown. Sarcasm alert...Sarcasm alert...Approaching sarcasm warning...Thanks for looking after the artwork well guys. I have seen two of my favourite ever comic pages ruined by people who did not know how to look after them.

All of us so-called Talent in Comics, work for Print. As much as I love Comic Art by my fave Artists, the Original Original Art was done for Publishing, not for Wall-Hanging or hiding away in a Baggie. Obviously it's a bit different now. If Inkers had to start over if/when they made a mistake, the work would never get finished. I'm lucky to get a single page Inked in 8-12 hours. I could certainly make more money managing a Taco Bell.
Ink, White-Out, Paper, Brushes, Pen Nibs, etc., have all changed pretty dramatically over the last century... I remember Al Williamson complaining about Windsor-Newton brushes and ink when I first met him in the late 70s. The Quality has never been dependable, and it's So Much Worse now. That adds to the problems with the Original Art being done on that archaic, somewhat obsolete thing called Paper.
All that said, you kinda have to do Stars with White-Out... unless you're insane. My old good friend, Dave Stevens, was even more anal retentive than me - which is really saying something. Most of the time, the only Whiteout on his pages is Stars. : )
