Description

Carl Barks finished this great "House of Haunts" 24-pages long Uncle Scrooge story in August 1965 and it was published in US # 63 (May 1966). He got paid $1092 for this artwork for the story. Later Barks got as a retirement present back his original artwork for 5 of his US 24-pagers, they were from US #59-63.

When I visited at Another Rainbow's office in Arizona in 1990, and met Bruce Hamilton there, I asked if he would know some really good Barks' comic book art for sale in the markets. I simply didn't have enough visibility from Finland. And I really meant superior, not just what would be available right then, I could wait too.
I ended into this trip to US by first buying in 1989 the lower half from the earliest survived Barks' comic book art, aka "Trade Rat" half page (see its story from https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1568958)

Then back in 1990 I had followed a few years comic art markets, and please remember now it was a long time before internet, so it was mostly by reading Finnish Disney comics (Aku Ankka), getting some fanzines and art catalogs by post (yep, from US to Finland). So I had just a slight idea about what has been sold, and seeing asking prices.
My budget was limited and I tried to get best what I could, rather just 1 piece instead of 2-3 pages. Already then during my trip Bruce told me he could get this 10th page from Uncle Scrooge story "House of Haunts". I was more than delighted and agreed, yes please I want to buy it. However, it took some more months to get logistics working and for me to pay it. Still then in 1990 I didn't have enough understanding to place this page into its context, I didn't have good enough understanding what pages were surviving. This page among the Trade Rat was the driving force for me to get understanding about Barks' surviving comic book artwork, and later making a study about them. I hope this short story would inspire you in your art collecting, not just reaching the point to hang on to your wall nice artwork, but it can also inspire you further in many ways ;-)

Provenance of this artwork looks to be following: Professor Donald Ault bought this artwork directly from Barks, most likely in late August 1970, when he had the first meeting with the artist. There exists 2 photos where he is with Barks and with this artwork US #63 page 10 and with the earliest surviving Barks' cover WDC #96, in the other photo Barks signing that cover, dedicating it for him. This US #63 page 10 is having the dedication "To Lynda", for Donald's wife. I am supposing Bruce Hamilton contacted them in 1990 and there has not been other owners between me and the Ault family.

Barks titled this story as "His Shining Hour"  but the publisher changed it to "House of Haunts". Well, if thinking how there is one page presenting shining Uncle Scrooge wandering around the castle, I think it is then clear where from came the original name of the story ;-)

This "House of Haunts" story has been published and re-published several times at least in 16 countries, please check the details from here: https://inducks.org/story.php?c=W+US+++63-02
For me it was a nice task to hunt copies around the world, see the additional photos.

At last !! :-) Sorry - I can`t seem to find enough superlatives to describe this amazing page, which in my opinion rates as one of the very best pages ( maybe the best ) from this great and spooky story. Matti - though you have owned the page for 30 years it`s now finally about time to officially say : CONGRATULATION !!  ( And I am happy that I could contribute just a little by sending you a photo of the original script page.) :-)

Thank you so much for posting this picture. It is truly remarkable that you ended up with it with so little knowledge of other existing art. It has got to be one of the most important Barks originals in existence. The quality is absolutely breathtaking: the best example of his work that you could ever hope to find. Thank you also for sharing the very interesting provenance. Today (as Matti knows), I own the cover to WDC&S 96 which I acquired from the sale of Bruce Hamilton's estate in 2006. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall that day in 1970 when Barks met with the group of fans and signed both pieces. I hope that, some day, they will be together again in a museum for everyone to enjoy.
