DescriptionFantastic, and previously unknown, Dan Smith illustration, likely drawn in the late 1800s when Smith was wandering the West doing Indian illustrations for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Weekly. Double signed, the second an inscription “to my friend, C.H. Werner,” dated June 1921 (presumably the date of the inscription, not the art). Art is 19” x 11”.Great story of how this piece came to light. A couple weeks ago, a guy I will call “Dave” (because his name is Dave) contacted me through CAF saying that he had a piece of Dan Smith art. Dave explained that he had been given access to a couple of old sheds in NJ, with the understanding that he had to clean them out. This piece of art was found abandoned in one of the sheds. Dave thought it was interesting so kept it for about a year at his house, until his wife told him to throw it out. Dave did a search of Dan Smith art on the web, and found one of the Dan Smith pieces on my CAF site. He contacted me asking about it, and I told him everything I knew. We quickly agreed to a price for me to buy the piece, and next thing I know, I am meeting Dave at the Woodrow Wilson rest stop on the NJ turnpike to make an exchange. Dave is a great guy, and I deeply appreciate him reaching out (and not throwing this art out!!). Thanks, Dave! Social/Sharing |

Great looking piece of art saved by serendipity. Unfortunately for every story like this, there are probable over a dozen stories where the art is lost forever.

Amazing that an artist of this caliber can be so little known. Congrats on another one!
