Description

Boyette -- a triple-threat baller -- handled all the art, all the writing and often the hand-lettering on his independent-comics assignments. Here is such a turnkey job, in a sequence of consummate weirdness. (Larger corporate publishers confined him to illustrating the words of other scribes; but Boyette preferred the greater creative freedom of the indie sector.) This title-page sequence, from a harrowing tale of the French Revolution, features a perfectly on-model Vampirella and a wealth of ghoulishly pen-stippled detail.

What a great opening framing panel of Vampirella! She seems so at ease as a host to bring us another tale of tense horror and irony. The little bat in the story panel is supposed to be her or us as we follow the story along.
