Description

Latest All-Star Squadron continuation commission, from Shawn van Briesen, uniquely (to date) featuring no members of team at all --- but Shawn did a fantastic job with the obscure characters I did want on this one.

Story: the JSA (and Sandy) are in Occupied Europe, delivery "Food For Starving Patriots" (as seen in All-Star Comics #14 and the upcoming All-Star Squadron Annual #6) - and Zatara, Sargon, Dr Occult, Ibis, Tor and Merlin are magically reinforcing the mystic barriers keeping the Spectre and Doctor Fate safe from the influence of the Spear Of Destiny. Uncle Sam and his group of heroes are in Washington; Spy Smasher, the Marvel Family and others are in Fawcett City; the Seven Soldiers Of Victory are in Philadelphia; Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are busy on cases of their own; and - following the events of Young All-Stars #31 - most of the All-Stars, their numbers now boosted by the younger heroes, are returning from Rioguay.

So only a small group of heroes - Hawkgirl, Mr Terrific, the Whip, Robin, and the Grim Ghost (attending his first meeting) are on hand at the Perisphere to welcome Commander Steel back to the US, and the now-healed Krysalis (see #70) back from Paradise Island. Their hopes for a quiet meeting are shattered, though, by radio reports of costumed characters attacking banks across New York - characters Robin recognises as being the heroes of Pronto Comics' Crusaders title!

In a flashback, we see Funnyface bringing Americommando and Rusty, Barracuda, Fireball and Sparky, and their allies Jack B Quick and Blue Jay to life (we can assume that the other members of the League Of Liberty - Snowman, All-American Girl, Sgt Stretch, Yellowstone, and U.S. Male - aren't on the page he uses his bio-ray on) and sending them to do his bidding.

Splitting into teams, the All-Stars clash with the Crusaders - Hawkgirl defeats Blue Jay in an aerial duel; Grim Ghost and Krysalis knock out Sparky only for Fireball to flee; Commander Steel is ambushed by Barracuda; Mr Terrific beats Jack B Quick; and, while Robin is victorious over Rusty, the Whip is knocked senseless by Americommando. The three Crusaders then head for the Perisphere, only to be confronted by ... Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman!

Continued ... next issue!

(And yes, I *know* that Jack Q Quick and Blue Jay were originally pastiches of Marvel's Quicksilver and Yellowjacket respectively, but for my purposes they work just as well as visual analogs for the Whizzer and Red Raven.)

Great minds think alike, Trevor just finished this cover for me as part of the "And A Child Shall Lead Them " story-line. I LOVE what Shawn did here. You picked a visually powerful line-up

Looking forward to seeing what you and Trevor have come up with from a Legion perspective!

And Shawn performed wonders with the line-up here (reference for some of these characters was as rare as hen's teeth).
