Description

Another new "Continuation Project" commission for All-Star August - issue #113, art by John Howard, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Daredevil #69, original art by Sal Buscema. John did a cracking job on this one, I think - hope you agree!

Title: "... And The Home Of The Brave!"

Story: in issue #112 , the Star-Spangled Kid was savagely beaten by Captain Nazi while foiling Bundist saboteurs, and Stripesy vowed revenge. This issue - Pat Dugan brings the Kid to the Perisphere, where Dr Mid-Nite examines him, and determines that he'll need considerable treatment. Luckily the Pembertons are out of town visiting relatives so Sylvester will have a chance to recover somewhat before they return.

Stripesy is adamant that he wants to track Captain Nazi down on his own, even refusing aid from Spy Smasher, in town to confer with fellow co-chairs Liberty Belle and Hawkman. Over the next several days, Stripesy pursues leads, eventually catching up with the Axis villain as he prepares to leave the US in a U-Boat. Confronting him, Stripesy is also subject to a beating by the super-powered Nazi --- but Spy Smasher (who had trailed his comrade) wades in, shooting at the villain. Although the bullets are ineffective against the invulnerable Captain Nazi, he boards the U-Boat and departs, and Spy Smasher helps his fellow All-Star rather than pursuing him in his Gyro-Sub.

Later, at the Perisphere, the adult heroes are concerned about putting their younger sidekicks in danger --- but the Star-Spangled Kid hobbles out on crutches to address them. In only a few years, he'll be old enough to be drafted, and then the adults won't have any say in the matter. Until then, the Kid intends to fight the Axis his way, with or without the approval of the older heroes - and he's sure his fellow young heroes agree. Joined by Sandy, Robin, Fury, Dan The Dyna-Mite and others, the youngsters stand firm --- and the adult heroes reluctantly acquiesce, although some of them have private reservations.
