DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #125, art by Peter Clinton, based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case What If? #1 (second series) original art by Keith Pollard.Title: "...The Atom Endures". Story: In the last issue (currently out with an artist), the All-Stars discovered that Degaton had changed history, and a number of the heroes escaped from captivity to attempt to put things right. This time - only Liberty Belle, Robotman and Amazing Man remain free, on the run from Degaton's super-villain army. After Belle knocks out the Huntress, and Robotman is victorious over Steel's old foe Sledgehammer, the heroes approach Degaton's inner sanctum, hoping to find the time machine they've heard he used to change history. Robotman rips the locked door free, and Belle and Amazing Man enter, to find ... a storeroom of the other heroes' artifacts. As they search for anything which might be of use, Robotman is attacked - and dismembered - by the three evil Kryptonians Mala, Kizo and U-Ban. Liberty Belle grabs for Starman's gravity rod in an attempt to fend them off, and Will Everett reaches out wildly, snagging --- Sargon's Ruby Of Life! Immediately he absorbs the properties of the mystic gem, gaining all of it's power and wisdom. While his comrade uses the gravity rod against the Kryptonians, the transformed Amazing Man dons the helmet of Doctor Fate, places Green Lantern's ring on his left hand (magically recharging it), and picks up Ibis' Ibistick. His newfound sorcerous powers easily defeat Mala, Kizo and U-Ban - though not before Belle is knocked unconscious - and Amazing Man magically frees the other captive heroes. He then draws on the subconscious memories of his fellow All-Stars (captured anywhere between the late 1930s and early 1950s), and brings into existence the living spirit of their former comrade, now wiped from history - the Atom! As the heroes engage in furious battle with the army of villains, the Spirit-Atom (gifted with mystical powers by the Ruby Of Life, Helmet Of Nabu, Ibistick and emerald ring, still wielded by Will Everett) passes into the time-stream and tracks Degaton back to the late 18th century. There, he prevents Degaton from killing Al Pratt's ancestor, setting the course of history to rights; follows Degaton back to the early 1950s and disrupts the timestream to stop him traveling any further into the future; and finally stops him regaining his memory, preventing him from killing Professor Zee - before the spirit of the Atom, the very heart of both the JSA and the All-Star Squadron, finally fades away. History returns to normal - Danette Reilly waves her brother Rod off on the first leg of his journey to Hawaii as he rejoins the Navy; Green Lantern is joined by Air Wave in installing the Squadron's new radio equipment; and whilst sat in an exam at Calvin College, Al Pratt bemoans how dull his life has been for the past week and looks forward to donning the costume of the Atom again, to once more serve as part of the greatest assemblage of heroes the Golden Age has ever known! Pete did a fantastic job with this, visualising some incredibly obscure villains, and I very much hope he'll be doing more for me in future. Oh, and those villains? Clockwise from the Atom's right hand, they're Mekanique (All-Star Squadron), Yellow Wasp (Wildcat), Star Sapphire (Flash), Deadshot (Batman), Hummingbird (Hawkman), Gadgeteer (Steel), Villain From Valhalla (Sandman), Osira (Wonder Woman), Harlequin (Green Lantern), IBAC (Marvel Family), Lightning Bug (Sargon), Degaton (JSA) and U-Ban (Superman) - and it took a fair bit of working out to find villains who were each associated with a different hero or team... They can take a bit of work to plan, but I'd say give it a go - very satisfying when they come together.
