Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #156, drawn by frequent contributor John Howard, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Sal Buscema's cover to Avenggers #91.

Title: "Suddenly -- The Samuroids!"

Story: The week before Christmas, 1942, and Superman, Batman and Robin are in California, delivering presents to the orhaned children of soldiers, sailors and airmen killed the previous year at Pearl Harbour. With their sad duty complete, the Worlds Finest trio head for a nearby Bond Rally, lending their presence to encourage citizens to raise money to support the war effort.

Just as the rally is concluding however, it's attacked, by a giant robot in the form of a Japanese samurai! Batman is shocked - he had encountered the Samuroid earlier in the year (see All-Star Squadron Annual #5) but had thought it destroyed by Green Lantern, Johnny Thunder, Firebrand and other members of the All-Star Squadron. His shock is redoubled, however, when a second Samuroid appears, and the robots launch an assault on the three heroes!

Batman and Robin recognise that their power will be almost ineffectual against the robots, so leave it to Superman to tackle them - but the Man Of Steel's punches seem to have little effect, and he is unable to use the heat of his x-ray vision to melt his robotic foes! A combined punch from both the robots lays Superman low - and Batman and Robin aren't far behind, as a gas cloud from the fingertips of one of the Samuroids sends them into unconciousness!

Meanwhile, back in New York, Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle break off from supervising the reconstruction of the Perisphere to visit Robotman at his laboratory, but their team-mate has disappointing news - Gernsback, their faithful robot butler, was crushed when the Perisphere was attached and levelled (in issue #144) and the damage was so great that Robotman no longer thinks that he can repair their artificial custodian. Some of his electro-mechanical components may be able to be put to use in a different form, however - Robotman wonders aloud about possibly constructing a robot guard-dog who might protect the perisphere in future...

Back in California, the Worlds Finest heroes regain consciousness, only to find themselves aboard a giant Japanese submarine off the West Coast - and alongside fellow heroes Judomaster and Captain Marvel Jr! Superman cannot explain his recent weakness - he doesn't know (and nor do the Japanese) that the Samuroids are powered by radioactive material from a mysterious green meteor unearthed in Japan, which will later be recognised as fragments of the destroyed planet Krypton.

The heroes free Judomaster and turn their attention to liberating Captain Marvel Jr, but their efforts are interrupted by the arrival of two Samuroids - under the command of the Nazi villain Baron Blitzkreig!

Continued - next issue!

Another great classic layout!  Good thing the costumes are easy to identify from the back!  Howard packs in the danger and desperation on this cover!

It's lucky I picked three heroes who *could* be identifed from behind, really... ;)
