DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #157, drawn by frequent contributor Peter Clinton, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Rich Buckler's cover to Avengers #103.Title: "Attack Of The Samuroids!" Story: The week before Christmas, 1942, and reports reach the All-Star Squadron of giant robots seen on the West Coast. Attempts to contact Superman, Batman and Robin (visiting California, as seen in the last issue) and Tsunami and Neptune Perkins, both permanently based there, prove fruitless, so Commander Steel, returned from an assignment in Europe, joins Starman and Green Arrow in the All-Star's new aircraft, the Flying Wing (see issue #140), and heads across country to see what's happening. On arrival, the heroes are met by Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel, both of whom have flown to the West Coast to look for their young compatriot Captain Marvel Junior, who had not returned to Fawcett City as expected after visiting California to appear in a short film encouraging youngsters to donate to scrap drives. The five heroes travel to the supposed site of the giant robot attack, and hear reports that the Worlds Finest trio, and Judomaster, fell victim to mechanical creations in the form of Japanese samurai - who Starman recognises as the Samuroids, one of whom hed encountered on a previous visit to California (in issue #88). The situation is clearly serious, so the All-Stars set off to try and locate their comrades, with Starman's gravity rod able to detect residual radiations from the Samuroids. The trail leads into the Hollywood hills, which contradicts the reports which the heroes had been given indicating that the Samuroids had headed out to sea, but as this is the best lead they have, the Marvels, Starman, Green Arrow and Commander Steel decided to follow it regardless. Arriving at an abandoned contruction site, the All-Stars assume that they've lost the trail, but from behind a hill rises the form of a giant Japanese robot, which immediately attacks them! The heroes fight back, but a gas cloud from the Samuroid's fingertips knocks out both CAptaim Marvel and Mary Marvel, and a barrage of arrows from the Emerald Archer proves ineffective against the armoured giant! Commander Steel charges at the Samuroid's legs, hoping to knock it off-balance, and Starman uses his gravity rod to aid the attempt, but again the attack is unsuccessful. Green Arrow attempts to revive the two members of the Marvel Family, and as the Samuroid attacks again, Starman's gravity rod holds the robot back - but miniature rockets fired from the Samuroid's fingers strike Steel, knocking him for a loop! The heroes regroup, and square off against the Japanese robot - Starman focuses the power of his gravity rod on the Samuroid's chest-plate, opening a small fracture which allows Green Arrow to fire an explosive-tipped shaft into the breach, and Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel both slam into the robot at high speed, toppling it over! With the Samuroid off it's feet, Commander Steel is able to aim a series of punches at the robot's head, shattering the faceplate and allowing him access to the electronic brain within, which he starts to demolish, before being stopped by Starman, who tells him that it may be possible to find clues which will help them track down their missing team-mates. As Starman starts to work on the remains of the robot, Captain Marvel scoops up Steel and Green Arrow and - with Mary Marvel following - flies off back toward the site of the attack on Superman, Batman, Robin and Judomaster to see if they can find any further indication of their location... It's a great cover composition from Buckler and his short run on the covers after Avengers 100 deserves to be looked at again for the dramatic qualities put on the table. Clinton does a great job subbing in the characters in tune with the story. Out of curiosity, do you give the artists the plot before the project?

No - I give the artists all the character substitutions, and I've had the basic plot outline for all of these in my head for years, but they don't see the plot in advance.
