Description

Russ Manning Star Wars Lucasfilm Presentation Strip #5 Original Art (August 1978). Sandpeople are always an irritant. This is a nice action packed flashback strip with images of Luke, C3PO, and R2-D2 fighting off the Sandpeople. If this tryout for Lucasfilm's approval looks a bit different than the published dailies, the reasons are twofold: this was both penciled and inked by Manning where the published daily had assistants (though top-flight ones), and the image area here is a bit larger than that of the later strips done for publication, measuring 19.25" x 5.25". This strip, is reproduced in IDW's Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 1. Ink and marker over graphite on Bristol. In Excellent condition from the Manning Family Collection. There are a total of 6 tryout strips in this historic collection. This one is #5 and in my opinion the best one of all, and I Love it.

These Star Wars try out strips were the first ever drawn to create and establish the Classic Newspaper dailies. Unfortunately they were just try out strips that never saw publication in Newspapers nationwide. It wasn't until many years later, that they were official published in the three book Classic Volume Collection created by IDW. See photos below of the full 6 part published sequence by IDW.
