Q&A with ALFREDO QUINTERO

Q: Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?
A: Well, I guess if I had to choose a grail it will have to be the Kraven's Last Hunt theme commission, that Mike Zeck did for me back in 2005 inside his first sketchbook in which he set aside 25 sketchbooks to do a high quality original sketch inside the front cover. It turns out Mike Zeck is my favorite artist and this piece is very special to me. I actually won this item on Ebay and I got to choose the character as an incentive. Talk about winning the right sketchbook at the right time. I wisely chose Kraven from the theme of Kraven's Last Hunt, my favorite Spidey Story of all time. Upon request, Mike added my name and Wife's name in a graffiti style heart making it part of the image. When I showed my Wife the original art she really loved it. Mr. Zeck also added Black Costume Spidey swinging in the background, which was a very nice surprise. Mike Zeck hit a grand slam homerun with this piece and it is a family heirloom. I will never sell it. Mike never finished the 25 book project, and if memory serves me correctly he only completed 11 sketches of the project, so he has 14 more to go. Let's keep our fingers crossed that one day he resumes the project. It's only been 16 years.

Q: Please tell us a little about yourself.
A: I was born a long time ago (1973), in a country far far away (Madrid, Spain). It was a time of peril in communist Cuba, and both my parents migrated to Spain, with my then 1 year old (older) sister in 1969. Back in 1979 my parents decided to move us to Miami, Florida, and we have been here ever since. I attended FIU to complete my training, and I achieved the Rank of Master's in Civil Engineering. I am currently working as the Public Works Director for a local municipality. I am happily married with my Wife Yeisly, and we have two beautiful wonderful daughters, Keilyn (22) and Kayla (18), and a shih-pooh puppy named Waffles (3). I wanted to name the puppy Chewie, but I got out voted 3 to 1.

Q: How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?
A: I think the collecting gene truly all started for me with the movie Star Wars. Star Wars was the first movie experience that I have vivid memories of as a very young four year old child. Who can forget that opening scene of the giant Star Destroyer just going and going, chasing after Tantive IV. Thanks to both my parents for taking me to see it on the big screen in 1977 Spain. Happy memories. Big Nostalgia. My older sister always read comics in Spain. Her favorites were Asterix (which I still have all her Books) and Mortadelo Y Filemon (which she kept cause I can't stand them), so comics have always been around as far as I can remember. I do remember owning one Marvel Star Wars issue #4 comic in spanish (Las Guerras de las Galaxias) from 77, which was beat to hell and taped up on the spine. It's very possible that was my very first comic. Last time I remember seeing it was in the 90's at Mom's house but unfortunately I can't find it. I have to look in my long boxes and hope I put it in one of them. It's my only hope. I always collected action figures (Star Wars and G.I.Joe mainly), and with the toys I collected the Marvel Star Wars run and G.I. Joe run, but my favorite comic was Elfquest, and these Elves from time to time had Orgies. Imagine a 10 year old child seeing a bunch of buck naked elves running around in a comic and wondering, what the hell are they doing. LOL. But it was a wonderfully drawn comic and a captivating story. Thank God my parents did not check those books, if not it would have been game over. Through High School and College I never stopped reading comics, so that collecting gene never went away. I met my Wife in 1997. She would gift me a bunch of comic related stuff, so I tell her she is responsible for my very expensive habit (Wink Wink). We got married in 1999. In 2000 we got pregnant, and in Dec 2000 or maybe Jan 2001, I took my very pregnant Wife to see the Blockbuster Movie 'Unbreakable'. At the time I had no idea what this movie was about, but we both loved the Sixth Sense by M. Knight Shyamalan, so this movie was a no brainer. The opening scene just captivated me and I Quote, "There are 35 pages and 124 illustrations in the Average Comic Book. A single issue ranges in Price from $1 to over $140,000. 172,000 comics are sold in the U.S. every day. Over 62,780,000 each year. The Average Comic Collector owns, 3,312 comics and will spend approximately 1 year of his or her life reading them". Imagine my surprise as this movie developed, and Elijah Price (Mr. Glass), is in his Art Gallery called Limited Edition, selling an original art cover to a Father who plans on gifting it to his 4 year old son. It is in this moment of my life I realized I can buy and own Original Art. It is here that my collecting habits evolved to the next level. Soon After my 1st daugther was born, and right after that, I bought my first original Elfquest sketch of Cutter by Wendy Pini on Ebay for $200. The Good'ol days. What an exciting time.

Q: How do you display/store your collection at home?
A: From that very first orginal art purchase my art collection did not pick up much steam for a while. At the time my Wife and I were saving money for a down payment on a new house so almost all our money went to saving for that big house. Almost All. I knew I needed a room just for me to display my art so I convinced my Wife we needed a 5 bedroom house. In this home I have a magnificent Man-cave that I frame and hang all my very best pieces from floor to ceiling. No Joke. The rest are stored in one of those Itoya folders. Now, if only I can convince my Wife to let me hang some art in the bathroom walls, I could rule the World.

Q: What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?
A: I would love to own one of the six Kraven Last Hunt Covers. One of those would be my grail, but I do not think I could ever afford one. I wish I bought the G.I.Joe Devil's Due back Cover of Storm Shadow by David Michael Beck. It would make a great companion piece to my Snakes-Eyes back cover, but I could only afford the Snake-Eyes at that time. I missed the boat on that one. I would love to Own an Amazing Spiderman Cover, Web of Spider-man Cover, or Spectacular Spider-man Cover from the 80's. Again, I am now out priced and I could have bought one back then and I did not pull the trigger. AAAAhhhhhhhhhh. I would love to own a John Romita Strip featuring Dr. Doom with Spider-man from the late 70's. I would love to own a Wendy Pini Elfquest Marvel Cover or one of the Six Original pieces from her 1st Elfquest Art Portfolio Pin-up/Plates, but the Pini's donated them all to a University.
