DescriptionI've had a hard time putting my thoughts together regarding this piece and what owning it means to me. Let's get through the obvious points: gorgeous Art Adams pencil work, a huge 17x21 double page splash on a single sheet of paper, more dead X-Men than you can shake a stick at, the fact it was also used as the 2nd print cover of issue #2, etc etc. All those wonderful facts have made this piece very special to me indeed, however this mini-series, it's struggles, failures, successes and timing are what really make this piece a true personal grail in every sense of the word.Way back in 2010 life was literally kicking the shit out of me and had been for at least six months prior. I had been off and on with comics for the previous decade and the personal hardships had left me grasping for some kind of comfort. Comics had always been that for me growing up and even though I had lapsed in my collecting and reading over the years my love for the medium had never faltered. At the time I was making an effort to get back into the scene, figure out what was good and what was coming up and what I might like to read. More importantly, I needed to get caught up on my old-standby and lifetime love, the X-Men. I had never understood or had time to get into the Ultimate line of books, I could barely keep up with Uncanny and adjectiveless X-Men let alone learn about a completely new universe. But when I walked into my LCS and started asking questions they recommended I give Ultimate X #1 a try. It would be the starting point for a whole new era of X-stories and would tout Art Adams interiors in what was then thought to be a bi-monthly ongoing series. That picqued my interest. Although it was picking up after the debacle that was Ultimatum it promised a fresh start and was guaranteed to look awesome. It sounded like just the tonic I needed to take my mind off the real world for 30 minutes or so. And so it did, when it actually came out. Despite the delays and failed promises it was still the highlight of my comic reading that year and I still come back to it over and over just to enjoy the art and the ideas of what might have been if it continued on. If you made it this far through what is probably my longest description ever, then I apologize and thank you for taking the small journey back in time with me. I predict I'll be framing this piece very soon and gazing at all these incredible lines Art laid down for many a year to come. Social/Sharing |

Congrats on picking up a piece that has so much personal meaning to you. The fact that it's an Art Adams piece is icing on the cake.

Masterclass all around the globe, to Mars and beyond! Arthur is in full effect here with such a momentous double splasher with detsils that make the piece come alive (pun intended). But your tale is truly a special one to behomd as it represents so many of us past and present. Thank you for sharing and congrats on your sacred gem de la gem!

Nice piece! I was in the running for it at one point but dropped out. Glad it went to someone who loves it.

Wow! A doublewide dose of death pages! The bodycount is just as shocking as the amount of detail Arthur Adams put into the piece. It's impossible to swallow that overwhelming huge pill in one take and must be seen in smaller doses with tighter focus. They didn't mess around with death in the Ultimate Universe.

Thanks for sharing that story - life has kicked all of our butts at some point and the great thing about all of us in this hobby is that we can fall back on what we love and take a little comfort in this world of creativity. Oh yeah, the art is fantastic too!

I had a similar experince with this Ultimate X series Frank. Fell away from comics but the allure of Arthur Adams doing interior art made these books a must read. Just a beautiful set of issues and how fortunate you are to own such a nice part of it. Fantastic pages! Thanks so much for posting these.

I really think that Arthur did some of his best work on this book. And I love that it gave his pure pencils a chance to shine. Nothing wrong with his inks, but there's just something about his pencils that sends chills up my spine. This is an amazing DPS. Congrats on being able to add it to your collection.

I'm happy to hear you feel that way, because I also felt this series was some of Art's strongest and most consistent interior work. I'm a huge fan of raw pencils. His inks are razor sharp but you rarely get to see just how fine his linework actually is or get a look at his shading and gradients before he went to town with the ink crosshatching. Thanks for the kind words, only 97 more pieces to catch up to you! (which I have no intention of doing :D)

Multiple Man has become Multiple Corpses. One of the best things about an Art Adam's piece is all the time you have to spend looking to find the details, imo. Like Multiple (Dead)Man, or the Blob's decapitated head laying in the floor. What a sweet DPS! Beautiful pencils, and great story, too. Thank you for sharing both. Big congrats!
