Cover art for Nightmask #8 by Kieth Giffen & Michael Bair.

This was one of only 4 issues of Nightmask written by the character’s creator, Archie Goodwin - this dark & creepy issue is one of my most favourite from the series, and it resides among my top favourite New U comics in general too.

The surreal image features a very sinister looking JVSTICE holding Nightmask in a set of scales. I have always thought it was a striking image ever since I first saw it as a young teen in the Universe News (aka Bullpen Bulletin) page. The tone of it made Justice seem like a very scary, almost psychotic individual and I had not thought of him that way until this came out. I was immediately very curious and wanted to read it. When I finally read the story it delivered in spades on the promise of this cover art. I’m *beyond* excited to own this piece now.

A little fun detail to note is the artist’s signature circle that was covered up on the published cover - signed “Just Us” 😆

Also fun to note from the Universe News page of this month (June 1987), this was where the contest began to find a slogan for the imprint - with the eventual winner coining the phrase “Nuke Me With The New”… ⚡️🌎✨
