DescriptionFrom the second season Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fred Wolf Films) episode "Enter the Fly," here's a clean animation cel of the titular Baxter Stockman in all his mutant fly glory! This cel depicts him in a dazed state immediately after Shredder's goons blasted him out of the sky. This is a hand-painted painted acetate cel layer without any background, suggesting it was probably never packaged and sold under the "Animation Art" label. This particular cel (note the F-12 handwritten) has a curious shading effect that disappears in sequential frames. I also purchased it with the original line-art (F-13) from a different frame which is probably the sequential follow-up to this cel (seems common that cels would be layered over the art from a related frame for animation matching purposes). Also attached is a screencap from the VUDU digital copy, showing the approximate cel in its final form at around the 20 minute, 26 second mark. Social/Sharing |

Very special cel from Baxter's debut. I think Baxter's popularity opened the door for more of the weird mutations that sparked the imagination for the toy line.

As I recall, when Peter Laird was designing potential characters for the original Playmates toyline, he created a fly mutant that was distinct from Baxter Stockman (still a scientist from Mirage comics). At some point, both characters were merged into being two forms of the same person, thus giving us the "Super Fly" Baxter we all know and love. Ironically, the Mutant Mayhem movie took the opposite approach, starting with the idea of a Baxter mutating into a fly but then making him distinct (and dead) from the "Super Fly" mutant he created!
