Description

25" x 15" (19" x 9.75" image size) by Davis Meltzer. Original acrylic painting on illustration board. Date unknown. From the Estate of Davis Meltzer. Not sure if this was ever published but my guess is that it was likely done to demonstrate his skills in science fiction art for which he became quite well known at. His work depicting humanoid mechanical robots is his finest, I think. This piece showing his technical details of robotic mechanisms, is incredible. Even the grain detail of the wood is amazing to behold in person. Meltzer's attention to detail and perfectionism comes out in full force in this piece. He renders it like a highly technical NASA diagram. This piece was just recently released from his estate for the first time, and has never been seen or published.

Davis Paul Meltzer was born in 1930, in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, and attended school in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Both his parents, the late Arthur Meltzer and Paulette Van Roekens, were highly respected fine art painters—and he inherited their great talent. During his career as a freelance artist he created stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, painted dozens of sci-fi book covers, worked for NASA, and worked as a scientific illustrator for 30 years at National Geographic.
