DescriptionFirst off, can anyone name every character on this splash??Perhaps one of the most epic piece ever to represent the Guardians of the Galaxy title that I've seen. This was released right before NYCC as a buzz generator for the upcoming 2019 re-release of Guardians of the Galaxy series. I saw an interview where Donny Cates talked about asking Geoff Shaw to do a splash that would include about 20 characters he had in mind but in the vein of Shaw-style overachievement, he ended up taking it to the next level and drew approximately 40 characters in total for this splash to really play on the mystery of the campaign. This would serve as a teaser campaign leading up to the release of the new series #1 with the hashtag #WhoAreTheGuardians as a way for Donny and Geoff to drip feed details surrounding the new book. How did I discover this piece? I was told that there were other collectors vying for it upon Geoff Shaw's post on his instagram but I saw this way before he had posted it. In fact, I saw it before Felix, his rep was able to see it. Since I'm a fan of a number of Felix Lu's artists, I was pretty much hanging out at their NYCC booth on a daily basis, several times a day. Chatting with all the artists, reps, and supporters of Felix Comic Art. One person I really wanted to connect with was Geoff Shaw. After missing out on his Thanos Wins and Thanos Legacy cover, my ultimate goal was to see if I could get him to commission my own version of the Thanos Legacy cover. Unfortunately, he was too busy that day and wasn't able to sketch during the con. (Turns out I was able to get my hands on it after all, see my gallery for more info) We ended up having a really meaningful conversation about his art, journey, and a lot about The Paybacks, a title I happen to own a lot of art from. But for one reason or another before I left, he said hey let me show you some of my new stuff then pulled out his portfolio. The first page I saw was this promo page, upon seeing half of it, I was already in love. Then when he pulled it out to open up the splash to some of my favorite characters old and new all on one page, I said I had to have it. Of course, as I mentioned, Felix hadn't seen these yet so when I asked how much, there was a pause, then Geoff looked over to Lambert who was manning the booth at the time. He came over and I asked him how much but he quickly semi-panicked as he asked Geoff if Felix has seen those yet and he said no. So Lambert grabs the pages and starts putting them back into the portfolio while I also panicked and said I wanted that page! As I proceed to follow Lambert while he was putting Geoff's portfolio away, I gave him my business card and asked that he put it in the slot of the splash and for Felix to contact me. I didn't hear from Felix over the next couple days, probably because they're wrapping up NYCC business but I couldn't stop thinking about the splash. So I emailed him and asked what it would take to get the page. In all fairness, Felix said I would have to get it on the next drop. Which was exactly what I did. Took me several months to get my hands on the page as I don't have faith in shipping as I've had some drama on another page so I always prefer picking up in person these days. In fact, it was a good reason for me to finally get to meet Felix. I was in New York this past week for work so I made a trip out to Jersey to meet up with Felix and Lambert to pick up the piece. I've stared at it for a good number of minutes now and just can't get enough. From seeing Silver Surfer, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and Nova Prime from a distance to the close ups of Rocket the Racoon and Cosmo the Dog (who I'm assuming Donny is planning to kill), this is seriously a masterpiece and one of the best I've seen from Shaw. Lastly, read this excerpt from a Donny Cates interview in September, 2018: "Geoff and I have some INSANE plans for our first Guardians arc. This arc is called 'Endgame,' and as seen in Thanos Legacy, it begins with the reading of Thanos's last will and testament. An artifact that Thanos's brother Eros dug out of his late brother's heart, which very well may spell doom for the entire universe. What horrid secrets are contained inside the will of the titan?!! Find out this January!! And oh yeah... our new lineup. Well, that's a surprise as well. Use the hashtag #WhoAreTheGuardians online and maybe we'll give out some teases as we get closer! See you all in space!" - could this have been a more blatant giveaway to the long-awaited Avengers 4 title 3 months before the announcement? With all that above, this is why I have to say this is my ultimate favorite and grail piece so far in my short time of collecting original comic art. Social/Sharing |

Your excitement is evident in your description and it’s not hard to see why! So many detailed, but not too detailed, characters! Must’ve take a long to time to do...and must be a sight in person! Sincere congrats!
