DescriptionIt's dangerous to see Yuko Shimizu originals in person. The art is physically gorgeous, from the textured, fine-art paper to the brush strokes that generously kiss the paper full of the most wonderful inks you could ever hope to see.The scale is large, 13x19, and the work is quintessentially hers. The fusion of Japanese/American influences combined with a topic that she is clearly passionate about. I was quite obsessed and seeing the new covers became a highlight of my LCS trips. The story of this Jeff Lemire mini contains familiar themes - loss and reconciliation - and is a lovely story in the vein of We3 and the Pride of Baghdad. Social/Sharing |

"Cover me when I run. Cover me through the fire. Something knocked me out' the trees. Now I'm on my knees. Cover me, darling please, hey Monkey, monkey, monkey.
Don't you know when you're going to shock the monkey"

Love the contrast of the line weights used on the explosion versus the techier/finer stuff on the rocket pod.

The right stuff
The right stuff
Lemire was a great time
Monkey time was a blast
This time I fell in love
Now I hope it lasts
I can see it in your art
Tell 'em when you talk
See it in Yuko Shimizu
Cover in your thoughts
You got the right stuff, monkey
Fly to space this turns me on
You got the right stuff, monkey
You're the reason why I sing this song

I don't know what the hell this is but it's stunning. I seem to be noticing a theme here...

You had me at WE3 and Pride of Baghdad. Now I gotta read this story. If the art alone didn't knock me for a loop, you had to invoke two of the greatest animal-centric comics of all time...

She really does bring the impact of ukiyo-e while fusing it into something all her own. Big gratz!

FANTASTIC piece, M L! Yowza, the motion and energy on this thing is off the charts, and I really love how the feeling of opposite motion is captured so effectively... The violence and force with which the planet is exploding and forcing everything away is palpable, and yet the simian (hunkered down and huddled up) absolutely feels like it is sweeping towards it. 13x19, you say? Shyeah - I cannot imagine the power this thing puts off when you get to see it in person. No question on the astonishing beauty of this thing; no question as to what would move you to pick this up... I guess I'm just left wondering why someone would send the monkey to Krypton...? 😜
