Taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming to post a remembrance to Jack Katz, who passed away last week.

In 2021 Liam Sharp organized a kickstarter (The Unseen Jack Katz) to highlight the artist and I received this page as a part of that campaign.

Story and blueline pencils by Jack Katz, inks and letters by Sharp.

sorry to hear of Jack's passing, he had such an interesting and storied career in the medium on both newspaper strips and comics for so many different publishers and his independent projects, RIP.

I tried reading The First Kingdom when it was collected by Titan Books but couldn't make it through. Nevertheless, I respected Jack's ambition and his early willingness to create works outside the major comics companies. This piece and his other pages show the kind of talent he brought to the drawing boards over 70+ years of comics.

Just yesterday drawin', they let me know who was gone
Liam, what Jack has made put your inks to blue
You haunted out his painting and it came so strong
I got from kickstarter who you sent it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
Unseen story page that I thought you’d letter then
I've seen lonely times then I saw you’d be a friend
But I always thought Katz I'd see your campaign

Oh, I hadn't heard that Jack Katz had passed! But I suppose in some weird way it's fitting, given that he spent an entire life and career going unknown by most comic fans. I picked up the book Liam crowdfunded and there's so much cool stuff in it. You ended up with a pretty cool looking original!
