DescriptionSo Dave Cockrum is best known for his X-Men work - but I will be honest and say I picked this piece up not because of the artist per se, but rather because of the strength of the art. Loved and collected Thor as a kid and this cover is a great example of what I enjoyed about it. Always on the lookout for more Thor covers (shameless self serving plug)As always - appreciate your time in viewing my gallery. Cheers! Social/Sharing |

Agree on the strength of the art. High level of execution here by Cockrum. Especially love Thor's facial expression!

Cool Cockrum cover benefiting from the usual strong McLeod inks (especially on his face btw).

Odin's beard tissue a majestic male to female ratio.
Lady Sif would be pleased.
Beautiful battle cover D.

As far as I'm concerned, if you want a great Bronze Age cover, or a great Marvel cover, or a great Thor cover, or a great Cockrum cover, you checked all those boxes with this spectacular example. If someone wants to hold out (and spend then times the money) for a Cockrum X-Men cover, more power to them. But I can't imagine a single person who looks at this who wouldn't be envious. Great pickup sir!

Don't think I've ever seen Cockrum draw Thor before but it's clear from this cover that he has a real affinity for the character. Kudos to Roy Thomas as well for really doing all he could at the time to keep Kirby's Eternals characters alive in the Marvel Universe.

One of those awesome covers that is able to twist the hero around and show a front shot of the hero and villains all at once! Just beautiful how McLeod inks Thor to be as handsome if not more than Cap ever was. Looks like a Harpy, an Kirby space Aztec warrior, and some random beardo off the streets are giving Thor all he can stand and he can't stands no more.

Great addition to your collection, Duke. I don't remember this cover, but I probably read it when it came out.

McLeod's inks typically dominate the finished look of most pencillers he has worked over and although I don't usually think the inkers should do that, he was always one exception I didn't mind seeing do that because I think his finishes always made pencillers look even better.

I never would have guessed Cockrum. What a classic, gorgeous cover. I actually didn't notice the feet until Mikail said something, but, heck, Dave gets a pass for that for this beauty. Simply stunning.

Nice to see Cockrum's work highlighted in something other than an X-Capacity! Really cool addition, Dukie!

I say Cockrum and you say X:
Cockrum!
Thor!
What? COCKRUM!
Thor!
This song is broken.
Congrats on another beautiful cover!

Wonderful Dave Cockrum page! Dave was so good creating strong layouts that really make the heroes stand out! Love Thor's pose here, you can feel him straining as he spins his hammer round and round, getting ready to fling it with all his might! Cockrum really put this one out of the park!

The swinging of the hammer only adds to an already iconic Thor cover. Very nice.

I mean, does a Thor pose get any more classic than that one?! Love this, man - great expression, spinning hammer...someone's bouts to get it. And the lettering - clearly some high stakes. Cover date also happens to be the month and year I was born :) Congrats, DF!

Seeing this strengthens my belief that Marvel should publish a collection of Cockrum's covers.
