For 40 years, I had known of only one example of Ferd Johnson's Texas Slim, from the original run of the strip, 1925-28. I was thrilled to be able to add that strip to my collection a few years ago. I'm equally thrilled to be able to add only the second example that I've ever seen of this strip from this early period. Dated November 15, 1925, this Sunday page is the 12 installment/episode, as the strip began on August 30 of the same year. Johnson was only 19 years old at the time, and touted as the youngest cartoonist in America by the Chicago Tribune.

The artwork is in rough condition, but who cares? I love, love, love Johnson's cartooning from this period. It's some of a mix of Frank Willard and Billy DeBeck. Just beautiful stuff. The logo panel is long gone, but as you can see from the tearsheet elsewhere on this page, it states, "Dirty Dalton Plays the Market While Texas Slim Stages a Comeback".
