DescriptionWishing a -very- Happy 69th Birthday to the amazing Phil Foglio today!Even in his wildest dreams, thirteen-year-old me would never have imagined that he’d one day get to see this thing up close. Heck, much older me -still- can’t believe it. A thrill (no other word for it) to own a painted cover from one of my favorite series ever, by one of my favorite cartoonists ever. Even after all these years, the gorgeous, vivid colors positively explode off the 13x20 hard paint board, and I love how a couple different shades of green (those being ‘grass’ and ‘Pervect’) ground the piece in some serious Spring bling. It’s SO fun to see the rings on Aahz’s scales painted in, not to mention the red piping on his pants cuffs. Neat touches like the green grass popping up between Aahz’s fingers (and in front of his pants), the yellow of Aahz’s scheming eyes (a slightly different shade from the yellow of his fingernails, of course), and the white of the teeth in his gaping maw… Gadzooks!! Robert Asprin’s ‘Myth’ series of novels (as published by Starblaze) also featured amazing painted covers by Phil, and those were a huge selling point to me: vibrant colors with lots of charm, heart, and (almost always) humor. It didn’t matter how large the type font was inside (“Hmmm… How much story am I -really- paying for here?”), between the Foglio spot illustrations and covers, I was all in, baby. Although Phil only painted covers for the first two issues of the comic, this one certainly lives up to the high standards set by those lovely painted prose novel covers. Crazy and wonderful: a testament to where life can take you with some sweet good fortune. Hope you have found the same - Happy Birthday, Phil! Social/Sharing |

I'm just Phil Foglio
And everywhere I go
People know the art I'm paintin’
Poppin’ all the grass
Scalin’ each Aahz
Oh, what paint shadin'?
There'll come birthday
And youth will pass away
What, what myth they say about me?
When the end comes, I know
They'll say "Just Phil Foglio", as
Life goes on so crazy

I'm pretty sure I didn't look this good in my forties. The paints and colors have held up so well over the years. This must be a real treat to see in person. Congrats to you, AND to Phil of course.

Wow. Definitely remember this one. Great to see Skeev and Aahz again. It's like seeing old friends after too long apart.
"Charm" is the quality I most associate with Foglio's writing and art and this piece has it in abundance. Sure, his pure cartooning skills and the vibrancy of his color work are apparent but the quality of his character design (look at the face on that unicorn) and the staging of the action are just so charming...a quality that was rare in the comics of the day (probably still is).

Holding the original cover from a series you grew up loving is such a thrill. Even on screen, the colors really jump out. Those two greens give the scene an almost electric springtime feel, while the red on the cuffs and the painted rings on the scales are the kind of small, thoughtful touches that really elevate the cover's overall appearance. I love how the grass blades peep between the creature’s fingers and in front of his pants, even though the grass is represented by a flat green area everywhere else. Congratulations on snagging such a spectacular piece of your childhood, Jason, it really does prove that sometimes reality can outdo the wildest daydreams!

How cool to find art by a childhood hero! While I never read Robert Asprin’s ‘Myth’ series of novels or even saw any painted covers by Phil Foglio, I know what it's like to find something that you loved in childhood and can now hold in your hands. For me, it's art by my childhood heros--John Romita, Jack Kirby and John Buscema. But it's the same amazement--The strange pleasure of acquiring a piece of art you loved as a kid and now can hold in your own hands! It's a great feeling, isn't it? Congratulations on getting back a piece of your childhood.

A Foglio fantasy cover with everything one could possibly want?? I've been mostly running around thanks to a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old, but how did I miss this? Congrats, good man. This gives you D&D credits in spades.
