DescriptionJudge Dredd - The Big Sleep page 4 / page 5These two consecutive pages come from UK weekly 2000AD, prog 466, which saw print back in 1986. With a script from the classic writing partnership of John Wagner and Alan Grant under their typical TB Grover alias, and illustrated by the great Cam Kennedy, they appeared in the first episode of a two-issue story entitled ‘The Big Sleep’. It’s a Raymond Chandler-esque tale of incompetent private intimidator (i.e. hitman) Flip Marlowe, betrayed by his booking agent, and out for revenge. Flip is a deliciously designed Cam villain who wears a ‘pig’ mask, rides a jet pod, and carries out his ‘hits’, while narrating his own story. As obviously pleasing as it is to have these pages, (they are, after all, classic-era Judge Dredd), they have a very personal significance for me. In appreciation for a fan gift I’d made and presented to him, John Wagner set the story in a City Block NAMED AFTER ME! (my real world name - DONALD NEIL). In the early years of Judge Dredd, all Mega-City apartment blocks carried the name of somebody famous, so it was an enormous thrill to be granted the same honour. Meeting John again some 30 years later to get a page of the artwork signed, I was delighted that he remembered the whole thing. My block may only occupy a minor footnote in the annals of Judge Dredd but it still makes me smile. When this story was first published in 2000AD John sent me his original type-written script which I still have, and in 2012 I got in contact with Cam and bought the above pages. My eponymous block appears throughout the story - on these two particular pages it is identified as the source of the ‘probable leaper’ in Dredd’s radio message, and is clearly visible in various pieces of signage on page 5. As lucky as I was that Cam still had these pages, unfortunately the original art for the story’s opening double-page spread was long gone and I’ve not been able to find any sign of it since. A look at the printed copy in the pic above should show why I’m so eager to find it - subtle, it ain’t! So if anyone in the CAF community knows the whereabouts of this opening double-page spread please do let me know - I’m understandably rather keen to locate it. Social/Sharing |

A lovely page and a really great story to go with it (yours). The Big Sleep is one of my very favourite Dredd stories - most definitely a minor classic with pitch-perfect art and dialogue; just a joy to read. (I picked up a cracking page from Cam some years back: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=659109.) Good luck with the hunt for that DPS!
