DescriptionTwo earlier original cover from ”Walt Disney Comics & Stories” by legendary Walt Kelly was known to exist - before this beauty suddenly surfaced from the darkness..Walt Kelly made some of the first - and may I say, finest covers for the early WDC issues. Kelly drew some 80 + covers for WDC & Stories in the period 1942 – 1950. For many years it has been my dream to find a cover by Walt Kelly from the WDC run – but I also nearly accepted it might be impossible, as the publisher, DELL routinely destroyed the artwork after printing. With the surprising surface of the WDC 115 cover we now know about 3 WDC covers which was full drawn by Walt Kelly – and that has survived. Comparing to the other existing cover ( WDC # 45 and WDC # 88 ) I must admit that I personally prefer the cover of # 115 ; Here we see Huey, Dewey & Louie and Donald + so many extra fine details drawn by Walt Kelly. WDC #115 is like WDC # 45 and WDC # 88 a cover all completely FULL drawn by Walt Kelly – from pencils to the final inking. But then again : who could even TALK about ”prefering” when covers with Kelly involved are so extremely rare, that you should be happy if you are able to find one in the first place.. On this April 1950 cover we see some very cute kids and a full figure Donald and 6 very typical ”Kelly” chickens with the sweetest expressions, as only Walt Kelly could draw them. With 10 comic characters drawn on the cover, it makes the WDC # 115 the densiest of all drawn by Kelly. Who could ask for more..? And as I friend of mine said : ”I see ”Pogo” there..” The cover was once owned by all time comic fandom legend Thomas Andrae, who traded it 30 years ago to the person I recently bought it from. This Easter 1950 cover was offered to me in the Easter season 2019 – nearly 70 years after it was once drawn. Special thanks goes to J.C. for giving me the opportunity to enclose this fine and rare artwork into my comic art collection. I clearly remember the cover from my childhood when collecting the Disney comics. The cover was published in 10 different countries. Though I had the opportunity to grab a Carl Barks 1950 `ies cover instead I was never really in doubt that this time, it just HAD to be Kelly first.. So this is my first original Disney artwork by Walt Kelly and most probably also the only one I will ever get for my collection. Although popular in the U.S.A. Kelly`s Pogo strip and political satires drawings never really gained big popularity in Denmark mostly due to it`s many in-jokes and play on words. So though Kelly`s drawings for Pogo were excellent, it`s still the WDC covers Disney fans in Europe recognize and remembers in general. Social/Sharing |
