DescriptionAn interesting example of how art is adapted to editorial changes . . .Brave and Bold 173 and 174 featured Batman teaming up with the Guardians of the Universe and Green Lantern, respectively. The original story (left) featured a back story with Krona, the renegade scientist from the same race as the Guardians who accidentally created the DC multiverse when he built a machine to look back to the beginning of time. But after issue one was complete, editorial seemingly wanted the Krona plotline eliminated and replaced with Sinestro (published page on the right). The fantastic last panel on the published page (right) is a stat from the unpublished OA page, which features a rare use of zip-a-tone by the great Jim Aparo (which gets totally lost in the printed page, accompanying image). Thanks to Mike Burkey for the great OAX deal on both pages! Social/Sharing |

Beautiful Aparo art and yes, getting pages where editorial changes are visible is always a fun bonus!

Love that bottom panel!
Going to have the bottom panel blown up on canvas in sepia tone and hung in the living room.

A rare example of fully finished art of the same page done twice. I'd have to say that the Sinestro page art is pretty cool with the center section. Finally, a quiz question that only you can answer.

Hoo-boy! What a dramatic change the DC editors made. It's so interesting to see how easily the editors can alter the creative direction on a book at will and make the artists and writers jump through hoops to satisfy them. Cut it's cool that originals like this one survive so that we nerds can get the low-down on what went on behind the curtain. Fascinating that they changed everything except the final panel which they only altered slightly in the dialog. I wonder how much this kind of thing happened while we readers never knew about it at all. Thanks for sharing. Fascinating stuff!

Agree, would like to have been in the meetings when the reason for this was discussed. It likely has something to do with continuity in other stories at the time. Something I'd like to look into at some point.
