DescriptionSometime during my freshman year in high school, my 8th-grade collector buddy Ronny called and insisted I pick up the latest issue of The Flash for the Dr. Fate backup stories drawn by an amazing new artist named Keith Giffen.Up to that point, in my limited DC-only collecting, I’d never seen art so striking. The layouts and effects were unlike anything else DC was producing. I soon followed Giffen and inker Larry Mahlstedt to Legion of Super-Heroes, became enthralled with The Great Darkness Saga, and had their famous Legion poster on my wall for years. Giffen’s style shifted not long after that poster was released (no need to rehash that here), which makes this early example of their work together special to me. One day I hope to own a page from their Dr. Fate run with their stunning depictions of Egyptian myth and magical incantations. For now, I’m glad to have even a small piece of the truly magical Giffen/Mahlstedt collaboration in my collection. Social/Sharing |

Nothing out of place or left open ended. Giffen and Mahlstedt was uch a great pairing. This is the equivalent of finishing each other's sentences with how the art turned out.

Thanks! Coming from a man with some Giffen / Mahlstedt jaw-droppers, I appreciate that.

Classic deep cut Giffen, all the hallmarks are there, like early version of what would eventually become "widescreen," that profile shot, and the Mahlstedt finish. ANd fabulous story content.
DC...with a bullet!
