DescriptionThis is the first complete published comic story that I own. I was very lucky to win the auction for this piece. Here is the Comic Link description:"This is a complete Doug Wildey science fiction story entitled "The Visitor." Based on the CCA stamps on the reverse of these pages, this story was created in 1958. Based on markings on the boards, this story was intended for Alarming Adventures #4, but that issue never saw publication. It was, however, published later as the lead story in Unearthly Spectaculars #1. In "The Visitor," a man sees a mysterious prowler who might be an alien from outer space. He goes to warn a pretty woman in his neighborhood about the potential menace. She tries to send him away, but the man keeps returning and soon confesses his love. The twist ending is that the woman he's fallen for has left. It turns out she was also an alien and she's departed with the mysterious spaceman." "Doug Wildey had a career dating back to the 1940s in comics and illustration art. He created the classic animated series Jonny Quest in the early 1960s while working with Alex Toth at Hanna Barbera. Wildey returned to comics in the middle 1960s, and eventually to his most prominent creation, Jonny Quest, with a 1980s comic-book series published by Comico. Wildey passed away in 1994 at the age of 72." Social/Sharing |

A complete comic story by the creator of Johnny Quest. How cool is that? Wish I could see all the pages in detail, but even just that front page is amazing. Some incredible work going on in each of those panels.

It's very cool, Eric! Doug Wildey, according to those who knew him, always denied that he was a brilliant artist and said that he was just an illustrator doing his job. Pieces like this one put a lie to that notion.

The premise could be used for a television anthology series and we wouldn't think anything of it. These visuals have a higher level of quality and of the dramatic storytelling than most comics of that age.

Well said, Marcus. This feels like a lost episode of "The Outer Limits" from 1963.

I wonder how Wildey would have fit in with artists like Johnny Craig and Reed Crandall?
