Description*My scanner really lost the details of Matteo's work on this page so just took a pic of the page. Scanner's attempt is posted under additional pics just to show the difference.*I think Batman The Animated series really put the tragic tale of Mr. Freeze into a perfect framing. It was a Shakespeare-ian tragic tale of love/loss, attempt/struggle to save but never quite able...which then corrupted the man. This was always the aspect of Mr.Freeze I loved the most...it added a depth and complexity to the character. I bought this page because it depicts a moment of that sadness in the man who wants to save his wife.... After purchasing this page though I actually picked up the book and gave it a read. I am just going to admit that I was a bit bummed after reading it...everything I mentioned above about why I originally felt something for the character was kind of overturned. It changed a motivation of love and loss to a more narcissistic and selfish control type motivation for Mr.Freeze wanting to save his wife. Oh well, I'll watch The Batman animated series episode on Mr. Freeze'a origin and then look at this page and see the forlorn...I'll pretend it's attached to that story arch. On the art side though I love the art from this series and thought Matteo Scalera did a stupendous job. Having the art in hand I've noticed what fine lines he actually works with in addition to the great inkwash style shading effects. The last two panels I think are really wonderful. I can feel his pain... Social/Sharing |

The isolated last panel speaks volumes. Perfectly capturing his sense of loneliness and despair.
I too will stay with the better interpretation and just enjoy this lovely artwork in that context.
Congratulations on another gem in your collection!

Agreed on the book upending the backstory that was in the animated series, but this page still shows the frustration and despair of Freeze saving his wife that could be in line with the animated backstory. And that last borderless panel really sells the isolation that he's living with. Congrats!
