DescriptionThanks R Berman for confirming the artist's name and some backstory to his life!I bought this because I think the image is beautifully done. I simply enjoy looking at it...and what better reason than that? I think it is done in charcoal but I'm not entirely sure. Image area is about 10"x12". so....BEHOLD!!!! THEN I AM STRONG!!!!!!! Moody Press specialiszed in religious books. I read one of Frencena Arnold's other novels when I was a teen. This one is apparently about an orphan who perseveres through hard times. Its title comes from the Bible:" I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:9b-10)
There was a painter named DeWhitt Whistler Jayne, a distant relative of the more famous painter Whistler. Jayne was a graduate of Wheaton College; here's (https://recollections.wheaton.edu/2012/03/a-brush-with-reality/) an article about him. He would be a likely painter for this, both in terms of age and subject matter since Wheaton is a Christian college. Jayne painted two U.S. presidents, among others.
