DescriptionThis piece comes from the collection of my friend Bob Murphy. Although we had only met in person twice when he allowed me to visit with him in rural Georgia, we had years of correspondence. At the time we met, I was about half his age in my mid 40's but we connected over strip art and in particular our love for Milton Caniff and Terry and Pirates. Bob was a kind and generous collector sharing his love for art with me. On the two times I visited him, I remember this particular daily among the treasure trove of other art Bob owned. I don't think the scan can capture how breath taking this is in person. Having seen it in person, I was hoping it would end up with either myself of my good friend Benno who was the one that had introduced me to Bob. We had some discussion around the art at the time it became available and in the end it will reside with me here. I am honored to become the caretaker of this piece after it was loved by Bob for so many decades. I am still awaiting it as I get my heritage shipments in batches but I decided to post the image today as I am updating my site shortly and there is some housekeeping with scans I must do with that process.Ha! I forgot to talk about the art itself! it is a rare single panel daily with a great sci-fi scape and a stunning portrait. Alden was fantastic at machinery and flying objects having gotten his start drawing aviation illustrations before finding comics. His women are surpassed only by Frazetta and Raymond. I still think McWilliams might be the most underappreciated artist but the final price of this daily would suggest otherwise...at least in this case. Check out some of the McWilliams art I have in this gallery. It is not my entire McWilliams collection but the best pieces are all here. Social/Sharing |

Any time you can acquire a single panel daily, it's a real thrill. Firstly, they're the newspaper strip equivalent of the comic book splash page, but far more RARE! Secondly, they always look fantastic due to the nature of the newspaper strip's horizontal orientation, which gives the art a beautiful widescreen effect. This horizontal orientation is also known a "landscape", so there couldn't have been a better subject matter for this particular daily than a Science Fiction landscape! Truly fabulous.
As you know, we've both always felt that McWilliams was a very underappreciated artist. Though given that his best work is the stuff he did after appropriating Al Williamson's brush inking approach, I suppose that's understandable. However, I think that over the past 10 to 15 years, with those of us who own McWilliams art posting it online and expounding the virtues of it, we've helped to raise awareness of his art and it has been far more appreciated since then, which is nice to see. Speaking of the man whose inking approach McWilliams ultimately chose to emulate, I personally would also add Williamson to the short list of artists whose ability to draw beautiful females surpasses that of McWilliams.

Ruben, you and Jeff have definitely raised awareness among collectors of the virtues of McWilliams and a host of other strip/non-comic-book artists, and CAF is much richer for it.

Amazingly cool strip! Love the futuristic city McWilliams drew. And his portrait of the woman is stunning! I'd love to see more of his art.
