Description

Ethan Reckless: your trouble is his business... for a price. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips make a fantastic creative team, and these books are no exception. Early 1980s Los Angeles noir has been done before, but a refreshingly different take is on offer here. I wanted a page with the main character, and this is a nice example of how he blows off steam in the Pacific Ocean (I can definitely relate). The gathered lifeguard towers are reminiscent of wintertime SoCal when the tourists have gone home and the locals can enjoy more peaceful, albeit colder environs. Phillips uses heavy black ink to create silhouettes against an oceanscape sunset. Most artists struggle to realistically portray the act of surfing, but Phillips does a credible job here. Apparently Ethan is a goofyfoot.

Great page from my favorite Reckless tale! To me, Phillips pefectly conveys the low key, but physically capable, vibe of the main character and his isolation in a crowded city in this beach scene
