Thrill power overload! Another historical tour-de-force! Bolland's impactfuly page design compels your complete attention and makes you want to purchase the Prog and dive right in. Who needs zippotone when meticulous dot shading? Love the Odyssey ship practically exploding towards the reader. Everything so cleanly executed by the artist.
Stunning, historical page! Always a treat to see color work from Ezquerra, which still looks incredibly vibrant all these years later. Amazing how Johnny and Wulf were perfectly developed from the very beginning. Cool to see Johnny's x-ray eyes in action and the bad guys getting blasted. I always wondered how Carlos came up with the Strontium Dogs' uniforms. Ezquerra's design sensibilities were just top-notch, obviously.
Strontium Dog vs. Strontium Dog! Great action page with interesting panel design. Cool to see Wulf throwing der happy stick and a somewhat rare Johnny hand-to-hand attack. Effective perspective shift in the last two panels shows our heroes blasting their way down a level. Always good to see different bounty hunters with their wide variety of mutations as well.
One of my favorite stories as well, and Mignola art is indeed crazy expensive these days. I really like this recreation though -- the wash background and wispy smoke seems to create a more ethereal atmosphere, which is perfect for the mood of this book. Batman's features, while still in shadow, are more distinguishable -- allowing us to see a figure deep in contemplation, or perhaps dismay at the state of the city. Love all the details in the background, including the "Mignola & Co." sign on a nearby building.
King Carlos was the master, especially on Strontium Dog. Love the circular panel with Johnny's gun breaking the border for dramatic effect. Also cool to see Ezquerra's trademark jagged outline around our favorite bounty hunter. Always cool to see how different, weird aliens are portrayed, as illustrated in the last panel.
Great cover really makes the reader want to open the Prog and see what happens! The Eagle ship design is fantastic, as expertly interpreted by Gibbons. Cool talking heads too.
As a side note, I recently found some very amateurish comics I drew as a kid (the Gulf Coast Avengers) but not sure I'm brave enough ro post them here on CAF.
More Manix than Manix! Describe in single words only the good things that come into your mind about... your Manix. A remarkable homage... indeed.
What a powerful image this is! Love the strong inks and the way Man-Things body merges and connects with the trees. One of those times where the black & white artwork is much better than the finished color cover.
Amazing imagery. For me, it's all about the decaying house on the hill and the trees! Love the use of heavy ink to delineate the dark shadows and accentuate the creepiness. Nice close-ups of Commissioner Gordon and then Batman breaking open a door in the inset panels. Makes me want to see what they find. An easy choice for the Best of 2025.
What an amazing piece this is! Love the colors and the composition. I could look at this for hours and keep seeing different things hidden in plain sight. Love all the nods and hints and tributes. Not to mention Dani just looks so beautifully content with her tea. An easy choice for Best of 2025.
Amazing piece, very powerful and evocative. I didn't even notice Galactus at first, which somehow makes it even better. An easy vote in the Best of 2025.
Now this is how I remember Dawnstar! Love her facial expression and graceful floating pose. The outer space background is remarkably cool, especially the green(!) nebula which serves to accentuate Dawny's figure.
X-23 looks like she means business. Love how their claws are all going in the same direction. The fog-enshrouded trees in the background are a very nice touch as well, creating added depth for the scene.
Belated congrats on 20 years. Dos Equis! The most interesting Manix in the world. Stay claimy, my friends.
I recently discovered that my local library has a flatbed scanner. They charge you to print stuff out, but you can scan art and email it to yourself for free. Game changer! This is definitely a cool page. I like the classic sound effects (THOK!) and that 5th panel leg kick. Awesome action!
Congrats on the Heritage pickup! I really like the contrasting cityscapes, both with impressive detail. The future image is reminiscent of Judge Dredd's Mega City One -- which seems appropriate.
What a cool sketch this is! The pencil shading is masterful. And even better that you obtained the art directly from Bill back in 1986. Wish I'd had an extra $25 when I got my Fathom around that same time. Kinda funny that those two characters got together in the story.
I recall being a bit overwhelmed and tongue-tied by the experience of meeting *the* Bill Willingham -- who had created such inspiring art for my favorite TSR / D&D modules, etc.. Probably didn't even know he was going to be there; I just showed up because my local comic shop said it would be a fun event. So, there were no real expectations; I certainly didn't have any money to actually purchase any real art; and in the end, I was happy to go home with this cool piece and a good memory.
Amazing how Colan could create emotional expression in a metal mask. And his dynamic pencil work captured cinematic type action. Iron Man looks fully focused and powerful here.
Loved this run of Colan & Newton art in Batman & Detective. Gene Colan drew the most beautiful, mysterious women, and Dala is a perfect example. Colan of course was masterful on all the moody, macabre, theatrical scenes as well. A great page here, and I also enjoyed your writeup providing historical context.
This is my favorite version of Saturn Girl. I like how Russell uses white to accentuate her costume, blonde highlights, and mental energy. She looks fully focused here!
This is a great, moody page from a beautifully illustrated story. Love the different perspective of Bats going about his business. Dave Taylor was a master of rendering in pencil, sadly taken from us much too soon.
Classic, crazy Cap combo. But there's plenty of room for more art! Add some McNiven and Gigzilla to create a jam piece for the ages!
The contrast of Natasha's black costume with her flowing red hair is masterfully rendered. This Widow towers over the competition. Congrats!
Love Willingham's art dating back to his work for TSR on D&D, and I also bought Elementals when it first came out. This is a great piece with all the main characters. Love how the pencils contrast with his vibrant paint work, creating a dramatic effect. Cool how only the good guys are in color too.
Must be using the power ring to make that costume stay in place. Wait, she's not wearing a ring??!? Also, surprising her underwear isn't regulation green color. Very naughty ;)
Quite possibly my all-time favorite Gigzilla piece. He really went the extra mile on this mystery sketch! Love all the details, especially the background topo and sky. A really fun concept, wonderfully executed.
Who doesn't love Manix's style? And although a night time scene here, his use of color is brilliant as usual. A very memorable, evocative image indeed.
Amazing early Mignola page. Love that last panel especially. The spikes of the palm trees blend with the alien silhouettes to create a very creepy, menacing effect.
Observed this one being created on one of the live Mystery Sketch webcasts, and the finished product does not disappoint! Sonja's red hair really stands out against the muted wash background. Congrats!
A beautiful and mysterious mystery sketch witch. Love the details on her face, and the color selections really work well here.
This Magickal Mystery sketch is my favorite of the current crop that has been posted to CAF so far. A very nice homage to Sienk indeed!
Probably the best single page from Blighty Valley! Classic future war Nu-Earth battle action approach. Beautifully rendered black hole and Norty spaceship invasion. Bonus getting the bio-chips conversing amongst themselves. Not to mention, Goddard draws a cracking Rogue. Congrats!
Truly a fantastic page. Love the panel design overlaying the large splash image with various elements merging between. Typical of O'Neill's work, there are so many intricate details to see all around the page. And the final panel is just a belter! Genius how he combines the platform they're standing on with a dead creature below.
I think these 2 two Kolins pieces are my favorites in your Legion-oriented gallery (so far). They are both so powerful and detailed with awesome backgrounds. B5's forcefield really sets him apart from all the Kirby krackling energy happening around him. And I love Brainy's pose and facial expression here; looks like he's ready to take action!
This is a fantastic piece of art from Mignola's prime. Love how the tentacles and flowers appear both inside and outside of the framed portrait, lending an aura of beauty and menace to the overall picture. Of course Mike's powerful use of black inks accentuate the overall effect. Congrats on obtaining a grail!
Love this page. You can almost feel the fear and intimidation brought on by Batman's dramatic appearance, magnified by the heavy use of black. The curtain is falling!
I also got lucky with a Mico mystery sketch this round. The way he draws accents and shadows in the costume is masterful.
Really cool that you were able to meet O'Neill and get this awesomely strange GL sketch. Wracking my brain trying to remember if this guy ever appeared in one of his "controversial" GL Corps issues. Would certainly fit right in....
This is an amazingly executed homage. Properly respectful but also with trademark humor. Feels like Manix was meant to draw Tintin.
Is this blue line? Is that a stat? Do I see original tape? So many questions.... Regardless, it's a very nice piece of art. Head in a jar! Mr. Freeze is one of the best Bat-villains. #AYKM?
I love Mignola's underwater scenes, as he seems to relish drawing fish and tentacles, etc. His chiaroscuro technique is highly effective at conveying the menacing situation, especially in the large 2nd panel. Great page!
This is a really beautiful page. Cool the way Yeates draws the water. Love the shoreline features and the seagulls and of course the lovely ladies too.
It was great to meet you at Comic Con, and I could tell you were excited to nab this piece. It really is cool, with all the main characters. Congrats!
Really nice details on this "sketch" and Kitty has never looked better. Lockheed appears properly ferocious and cute at the same time. Much like Kitty herself! Congrats
Excellent, unique take on Sonja. Nice use of color making her red hair stand out against a cloudy background. Her physique appears less curvy than other renditions, but still looks like she means business!
Agree this is cover worthy! Excellent portrayal of brooding Logan in an old pickup truck with a rural background. Has a definite Paul Pope vibe to it. Congrats!
Excellent, creepy take on Mortis. His skinny, bird-like frame with oversized claws convey a sinister menace. Ink wash used to very nice effect indeed.
Is Spidey jamming with the Dead? Or perhaps Hendirix Star-Spangled Banner along with accompanying fireworks? Either way, a nicely-rendered piece. Congrats!
