DescriptionPartial page by the great Peyo from 1966 for La Faim des Schtroumpfs from Spirou 1496. The page features Papa Smurf, Brainy and Jokey! This art was not published and redrawn for publication I think because they wanted them to have a means to carry the items they were out collecting. On the back it is signed, by Peyo? I know as early as 1962 Peyo was using assistants but I believe in 1966 he still would have had a heavy part in the layouts, pencils and inking of this page. In Smurfs art from the 70's and beyond you would expect a lot less of his hand in the art but this is still pretty early on. Regardless, I love this and it fits a special niche in my collection where both reverence for a legendary artist and nostalgia intersect. In North America this was first published in the Smurfs volume that include the first Smurfette.Some interesting new information was given to me by another collector. The original version of La Faim des Schtroumpfs was published in Spirou 1235, the Christmas issue for 1961. It was a mini-comic you could fold or cut up. The story was later redrawn for Spirou 1496*1500 in 1966 and later included in the album "La Schtroumpfette" in 1967. Social/Sharing |

This smurfs with a smurfy smurfiness. The lines are smurfalicious and smurf the smurfpectaions with delicate drawings of Papa Smurf and the smurfadelic lush forestry. It is no wonder that they have smurfilly delighted Satuday Morning mother smurfing children for so many years.

Cue the handful of French and Belgian collectors who will soon be in your inbox tellingyou they want to buy this, as well as the handful who will soon be in your inbox to tell you there's no way Peyo could've drawn this but they'll buy it from you anyway. If I were you, I'd just tell them all to go smurf themselves!
