I knew little of Baru and only know a little more now but I had seen his name and had a few dedications from him gotten for me by friends so I knew he was well known in Europe.

I saw this page on a potential trade list and kept coming back to it. It is from his most famous work and a decent page at that. What kept me coming back was the movement on the page and the expressions. I liked the way the big guy is first upset then smiles as he sees opportunity and then falls back and kicks the gun away. On the page just before this, the big guy is disarmed while walking by the guy with the cane who ambushes him. Neat page. Love the inking on this book too. This page says 382 on it but in the copy I have it is 381.

I liked his brief biography on lambiek too. Start with

Because his communist parents were convinced there was no bread to be earned in drawing, Baru first became a gym teacher before embarking on a career in comics.

How much better could a biography start:)

I have to admit to being unfamiliar with Baru's work, so thank you for the introduction. The ink and wash work is really lush, and the panel compositions/set-ups are terrific. I really like how Baru uses a straight-on composition in the first two panels, setting up the action in the third. The kick causes the whole panel to go off-kilter, which is a really cool effect. Congrats Jeff!
