DescriptionLast year, I acquired the page immediately following this one. When I saw that Rick Shiu had posted this page for sale, I knew I had to re-unite the sequence. I love this page for the drama and atmosphere, but I also love it because it's a true collaboration between two major artistic talents -- Bryan Hitch and Butch Guice. Guice makes his presence known, but he never overpowers Hitch's pencils. This page depicts the culmination of Ed Brubaker's legendary run on Captain America. In this scene, the Red Skull has taken control of Steve Rogers' body and is about to kill the new Captain America, Bucky Barnes. But Steve Rogers can never be counted out, and he and the Red Skull are depicted in the later panels in a deadly fight for Cap's body and soul. Guess who wins? Social/Sharing |

Great example from the greatest Cap run of all time. Love the half splash at the top and Hitch's creative layout at the bottom. Congrats!

Thank you! There have been a number of great runs on Captain America, but the Brubaker/Epting/Ross/Perkins/Hitch/Guice run is still the gold standard for my favorite superhero.

Sensational action page! The off angle tilt for every panel keeps us on alert with the camera moving trying to catch up with the action! Even panel borders are shown scrambled. The Hitch and Guice pairing gives that same big moment storytelling, but with more depth and darkness.

Thanks, Marcus! Hitch really knows how to move the "camera" for maximum dramatic effect. He is a born storyteller.

I saw this for sale and strongly considered it for the reasons you described. Glad it went to a good home!

Thank you, Rick, that's very kind of you. Congratulations on your recent acquisitions of the Zeck, Garney, and Kirby pages! You have an amazing collection of original art featuring our favorite superhero.

Excellent, action-soaked pick up, A K! A striking layout with that clean and crisp first panel, then the multiple tiers of highly detailed panels, underscoring Cap's fractured mental state as he reasserts dominance over the Skull. Dynamic page on its own, but the fact that you can set it next to the following page (with its lightning cuts and savagely awesome action) and study the story AND storytelling technique of these fantastic technicians (Brubaker, Hitch, and Guice) is ultra cool. Congrats on re-linking a sequence, A K! Beautiful action storytelling!

Your insightful comments always teach me something new or make me consider a perspective I hadn't thought about before. For that, I can only thank you most sincerely, Jason.

Thank you for the comment, Michael. I agree; this period of Captain America remains a high water mark in the character's history.
